Futile attempt to stop Microsoft will ultimately hurt Doom fans

Recommended Posts

This is the quote from DooM Legacy Home Site regarding XP support: “Except the fact we know some drivers are buggy on that OS, we do not support any product that forces anybody to register it. To know exactly why, please read the Legacy (GPL) license (and the philosophy behind it) and visit boycott. If you use that OS, you're on your own. We won't answer any e-mail about that since we haven't that OS installed on our computer (neither at home neither at work). Previous version of Windows are still supported for now. Thanks for your comprehension.”
I don’t know about you, but it sounds pretty strange to me -– majority of people will switch to XP and instead of helping fans of Doom to run Doom on XP (run on new OSs that what port is about, isn’t is?) Legacy Team will hurt them.

What do you expect them to do? Judging only by the quote, if they don't have the OS to work with, how can they offer assistence? I don't think as many people intend on switching to XP as you think, I certainly arn't. I'm happy with my nice lil' version of 98se.

Unless you want to be so kind as to pay them to switch to it. I don't think XP is all that great anyway.

Its open source. If you dont like it, then fork the project and run it how you want. Otherwise, stop whining.

XP hasn't crashed on me once since I got and it works faster (I had it for a month, wow). XP is the best thing that came out of Microsoft in a while. Besides I alweys liked Zdoom more.

Waa waa, I have to register Windows. Blah blah, I can no longer easily pirate it. Waa waa, how dare Microsoft take 45 seconds of my time in an attempt to crack down on rampant software theft. Blah blah, the whole concept of anything having any monetary value is just so wrong next to the open source bible err license.

What about Mac OSX? You guys plan on supporting that one? With all of it's bundled software?

You know what Windows would be:
.without Internet Explorer shoved up it's ass?
.without Outlook Express shoved up it's ass?
.with a an actual file manager?
.without Windows Messenger re-enabled every time you fart?
.without the Picture And Fax viewer shoved up your ass?
.without the Window Media Player shoved up your ass?
.without Windows Movie Maker shoved up it's ass?
.without making it so easy for companies to make spyware?

...a product that would cost half as much and be worth tenfold. It would also be the only OS WORTH plunking down fifty bucks for.

If every single fucking Loonix cultist is going to have a synapse every time it's made slightly more difficult for them to pirate the software they're cloning then for FUCK'S SAKE LING MAKE A WARNING ABOUT THAT TOO!

Isn't doom legacy dying anyway?

Legacy is dying.

Yet another crippling bombshell hit the beleaguered Doom:Legacy community when last month Doomworld confirmed that Legacy accounts for less than a fraction of 1 percent of all source port usage. Coming on the heels of SoM's departure from the Doom:Legacy team, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. Legacy is collapsing in complete disarray, as further exemplified by failing dead last in the recent multiplayer comprehensive networking test.

You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict Legacy's future. The hand writing is on the wall: Legacy faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for Legacy because Legacy is dying. Things are looking very bad for Legacy. As many of us are already aware, Legacy continues to lose market share. The number of Doom Players continues to drop. Legacy is the most endangered Source Port of them all.

All major surveys show that Legacy has steadily declined in market share. Legacy is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Legacy is to survive at all it will be among extremist gameplayers. Legacy continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Legacy is dead.

[only kidding :)]

Sure, except that ain't gonna happen.

They ought to make a WindowsXPLite, they could only cut FOUR FUCKING CENTS off of the price so long as they cut out all of that Goddamned bundled software and it'd be my OS of choice. I'm perfectly fine with Microsoft inventing new ways of protecting their product so long as they stop doing so much illegal shit.

They could also cut out all the phone support for my money too. Just make the OS thin as shit. I just need the OPERATING SYSTEM.

Windows Movie Maker is obsolete next to XMPEG, Nandub and Divx5 anyway.

Windows Media Player is becoming like Quicktime... bigassed, ugly, and it wants to watch everything I do. Fuck that. It's the default media player, it doesn't NEED any fucking features it just needs to be functional. Like I need to playlist my porno.

Image viewing and editing is something Microsoft needs to stay the hell out of. I've stuck with ACDSee Classic and PSP for the last five years and every time I try (or am forced to try) a different program the shock is too much. ACDSee Classic is the fastest viewer and PSP is the easiest editor for me to use, I DO NOT WANT that stupid bundled shit eating up sectors I could be spending on Chinese folk music midi or something.

Do you think they would even recognize a petition for a WinXPLite (WinXP home sans phone support and bundled software, that costs at least 4¢ less) or would they just completely ignore it?

What if we have 3000 people mailbomb them with the list? =)

I must agree with orion. I’m running XP Pro at work and home. It’s extremely stable and fast. Stability of 2000 + DirectX support of 98. It’s very good OS.

All the things deadnail mentioned don't bother me the least bit. On the other hand they don't exactly help out either so yeah if there was a XP-lite for let's say 25 bucks less I'd get it over the chunky version.

I've used Windows XP at work, and personally, I really just don't like it. It isn't as user friendly out of the box as Win98 is, and from what I hear the game support blows. But that's aside from the point, I personally just didn't like it, but I guess I'll have to learn to like it when I lease a Dell in the next few months...And HOPEFULLY those cocksuckers will let you get AMD chips too, because the In-hell monopoly is just plain pissing me off.

I don't know why people keep saying Windows XP game support sucks/blows. XP supports like 5x the number of games that Windows 2000 does, and it's only slightly less stable than 2000. It's almost impossible to predict what games will/won't work on your system after you install XP, but the way I see it, they took the stability of the NT platform and added great game support.

Sure XP has a lot of stupid stuff like useless garbage software and spyware, but think of all the bloated starving children with flies in the world.

I have a question. My '95 computer has a windows folder that is 88MB in size. My '98 computer has a windows folder that is 475MB in size. Both my '95 and '98 computers have a similar level of functionality (they can run the same apps for the most part). Could some of you with XP please list the size of your windows folders? I'm just curious...

On my home system with XP Pro I have:
zdoom
Quake III Arena
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Half-Life
Opposing Force
Counter-Strike
Unreal Tournament
Serious Sam
Serious Sam - The Second Encounter
Max Payne
All of them work perfectly. And its user friendly out of the box -- you just have to customize it to your liking. You can turnoff all bells and whistles and get your NT or 98 looking interface.

I'll admit getting RTCW to work was a pain in the ass, I had to search through a lot of pages on voodoofiles.com to find the right driver so the opengl subsystem would work. Still in the end it's all worth it. (hte anti LP)

XP sounds fine and dandy an' all but I think I'll stick with my 98SE until I either get a new computer or have to upgrade.

98 is perfectly stable (or stable enough) as long as you know what and what not to do with it. What you should do with it? Shell replacement. They don't rely on DOS so heavily as windows normally does and thus are about 1000 x stabler.

Since I've installed GeoShell, I have crashed about 6 times and seen 2 blue screens. That doesn't sound good at all until you consider the fact that 5 of my 6 crashes and both the blue screens were caused by the latest shareware of DeePsea, which apparently either...

a.) Doesn't like windows 98.

or...

b.) Is a horrible piece of coding garbage.

The other crash was caused by Daikatana. Now I get why they put "No Alt-Tabbing allowed" in the options.

So basically everything that isn't known to be terribly buggy runs fine on my 98.

deadnail, in case you wanted to do a little "house cleaning", check this site. It's got a list of every service that's installed out of the box, and whether or not they're needed. Two of the services ALONE eat about 78 Mb of RAM if you don't kneecap 'em. Take XP's stability and drop kick the mem usage. It's a beautiful thing.

As for those of you who hate XP, all I ask is that you use it once. That's the only reason I do bash Linux and don't bash MacOS X. Use it once. If you decide it sucks all the donkey balls you ever thought, flame away. However, if you, like the rest of us, find out that it has some kind of holy crash guard, runs God-alone-knows how many programs better than 98SE could ever concieve of doing, and even freaking looks nicer, then I freaking told you so. Neener fucking neener.

Nope, that's a Motherboard/Video Card/DirectX 8.1/OpenGL 1.2 problem. I used to have it too.

Win98 is nearly perfect in it's functionality. Win XP is just a bunch of crappy bloatware, not to mention it looks like ass.

Dude you misplaced "Win98" and "WinXP". No really.

What qualifies as bloatware for you?
