First-try Demo Contest #8

Didn't have too much trouble with the map.

Maybe because it was a FDC level, I went in expecting there to be some lovely traps that could catch an aggressive person off guard so I took it slowly for most of the map.

Turns out that assumption was right. Each key is trapped and usually opens up monster cages on the path you have to backtrack through so it's very easy to get mauled if you're not prepared.

I was. Every new area late in the map that had nothing in it...Plasma Gun out. I pretty much knew something was gonna go down there.

Thanks to a jerk enemy that decided to never teleport out, I didn't get 100% kills. Blast it.

Clear time was 45:52. I think I spent like 5-10 minutes of that trying to figure out how to open up the exit...and felt like a derp when I realized I missed a couple switches ;P.

Oh well, I had a lot of fun with this map.

yea good map ! I died in front of the switch opening the "exit door" which leads to the final fight. but I played horribly, i pity myself :P
good job anima!

ps: contrary to tatsurd, I felt much more at ease with last contest map instead

ergh I give up, died at the blue key and that was it for me, the easy approached to the key totally sucked me in and well I ended up running around like a headless chicken and then died for the godknow what time. I totally sucked :P
On the map itself, it's nicely designed, and not too hard, just my idiocy kept on making me a cropper.

Gave up trying to find the route after getting the red key. Probably missed something really obvious, but damn, 15 minutes of running back and forth the hallways the demo would have looked pretty ridiculous, even if I eventually would have finished the map.

btw I'd be interested in the secrets. In such maps I bet some of them are very important and helpful. I found only 2-3 "crap" secrets, without spheres/blue armours or good ammo/weapons.

I was a goner when event began (family reunion meals... booo) so I did an incompetitive fda. Time is 57 minutes, no deaths, little bunch - 10 or so - monsters alive when exited. I might have lost a liiiitttle bit of time chainsawing/hugging pretty much every wall I could. Anyways, cool map, I liked it more than the one from last year. Also I don't really recommend watching.

What does the 'Last' column mean?

it's the length of the last segment in which you survive all the way to exit.

of course, i had to leave unexpectedly at exactly three o'clock aka game time and i got back too late. :/

What is the goal for these FDAs? max or speed or something else?

This was too early for me as well, I only play doom in the evening.

I believe its fastest total time, the amount of deaths doesn't matter nor the final time.

As what I have understood, there is nothing wrong about dying, the goal is to make it to the exit as soon as possible. That's why the "Total" time is the time that counts.

Even though JCD died once, he still managed to reach the exit faster than every other player. I'm not sure if I agree with that but hey, it makes sense.

cool idea, seeing how players do at the first try. i'll watch some demos when i have time, given how i'm mostly overly cautious when i don't know a map yet. also an interesting way for map authors to see how players tackle their traps. or fall into them.

a bit of OT regarding the music in this map - i was pleasantly surprised to hear jean-michel jarre's industrial revolutions in midi, i'd really like if someone uses rendezvous 2 for a more monumental map, maybe something in the style of deus vult or sunder, where this should fit.

I was wondering if the monsters are not teleporting in the bluekey-zone because I left so fast, or it's planned that way. or is that tunnel reachable maybe? I guess I made something wrong or the likes. from "iddt" looks like the specter missing spawned half second 2 late, how lucky

I just played this wad now to see how I measure up. I made it to the exit room in one life in about 36 minutes, but I left the cybers alive and eventually died while trying to figure out how to exit quickly. Giving them the Keen death pointer was very sneaky.

Now I've got to watch JCD's demo and learn from the master.
