Threshold Of Pain II - ACT 2 RELEASED

Recommended Posts

Just tried it out. The female zombie is a bad idea; I'm sure female zombies don't sound like pornstars.

EDIT: And too lazy to see before; the wing baron uses Baron of Hell sprites in melee attack.

Strange how that bug is back after I fixed it in ToP1. I'll get on that.

As for the female zombie sounds, they're the zombie nurse from Silent Hill. Not exactly Slash from Quake 3 :P I must be the only one on these boards who isn't hearing them that way. Must just be your filthy minds :D

Still, at least she sounds vaguely former-human, rather than an elephant that stepped on a porcupine, like some of the other efforts I've heard.

EDIT: As I thought, the Lord of Heresy bug was caused by one line of missing code - fixed. (I really need to stop importing stuff from Shuffle ...)

I think the female zombie fits in pretty well, really. The death moan with the overall atmosphere of the levels themselves and the music, plus the echoes is really chilling.

If nobody else likes it, perhaps lower the pitch so it gives off the idea that she's possessed a bit more strongly? Also, I wouldn't mind being able to hold that axe the scientists have ;)

TBH I REALLY wanted to include the Doom RPG axe as a weapon, but unfortunately ripping the sprites and manually scaling them up to fit alongside PC Doom's regular arsenal is a bit beyond my remit. Plenty of golf left, though, so you never know ...

EDIT: Updated the demo with the aforementioned fixes and a few gameplay tweaks.

Another update to the demo. Hopefully that's the last of the gamebreakers dealt with, but if there is anything else, please let me know.

Progress has been slow of late, due to RL and getting ready for Christmas, but all of the spritework is now done, so I can concentrate on the mapping for now. I'm off work for a couple of weeks in the new year, so I'm hoping to nail another map or two then.

As far as timeframe goes, I'm not expecting this to be finished this side of Christmas, but by the time Doom turns 20 it should be out, played and long forgotten :P

Choosing the music for the levels has been a bit tougher this time around, as I'd pretty much used up all the best ones in ToP1. I had been toying with the idea of knocking up a few pieces of my own. To have a score which is inspired by PSX Doom, rather than directly lifted from it, would be amazing, and would really be inkeeping with the spirit of the mod.

As far as format goes, all music will be converted to .OGG format.

@vinnie: MAP01 has a couple, MAP02 has jack :P

Glad you used these 2 songs in the hell maps. Hope you re-use them again. They are my favorite songs on PSX Doom.

I already have them on auto-load, but I'm not sure about including them in the release. They only went on sale a few days ago and I don't think certain people would be too pleased.

You could at most use the low-fi MP3 as streamed from the Bandcamp site, rather than the hi-fi stuff you can download after buying.

When I imported them into my ZDoom jukebox, I downgraded them to match the quality of the PSX TC rips (22khz .OGG format) which is what I've been using in ToP up to now. I never intended to use the remastered stuff anyway, but I'd love to include Total Lamentation and Darker Than Blackness somewhere in the .WAD. I wouldn't have been including them all, as most of the music is planned out already.

I know that it's not uncommon to feature ripped music in Doom mods (UTnT comes to mind), but the difference is that Marco Beltrami isn't on the boards ;)

Yeah, this is what I intend whenever I mention using his tracks. They ARE free to listen to. You pay for the right to listen to high quality versions in a large array of formats that can be used wherever you choose. Of course beforehand he should be contacted if unsure.

I love ToP1. Its by far one of the best mods out there for me, and I'm looking forward to its sequel. But, I have one concern. Rocket Zombies. They're not fun to fight and they're a stupid monster to begin with. Please reconsider using them. Other than that, I'm looking forward to it!

@insanoflex: The Rocket Guys are a rare enemy, used more for "ohshit" factor than as part of a larger firefight. I've taken care not to use them too cheaply, and TBH I find the SSG Guys more of a pain myself (they're rare too).

@BlueFire: The problem is that big "II" in the title. ToP1 has already been out there with Aubrey's music for more than 2 years now, and for me to approach him now having already used his music for a project that has been around for that length of time is going to look, well, you know ...

Not only can Aubrey refuse, but also demand the removal of the existing music (which he is entirely within his right to do). This would have implications for both mods, not just this one.
