DOOM3 must be better than Halo

Recommended Posts

I have just bought Xbox and Halo and i think it is the worlds best fps ever! and i hope that Doom3 beats it. Have others tried the game ( halo ) ?

A buddy of mine bought it two days ago, we played about halfway trough the game cooperatively until our fingers bled and I got a splitting headache from looking at the tv screen. First time in months I've watched tv for that long on end.

Anyway, the game looks terrific and the combat is very good. The outdoor scenes are gorgeous (the ice and water effects particularly), though the indoors level design does get boring and uninspired after a while.

Things from Halo that I'd like to see in Doom III :

  • Vehicles
  • Nice big outdoor areas
  • Detailed explosions and other particle effects
  • Combat
  • Little dramatic in-game cut scenes
  • Whacking funny little critters in the back of the head with the butt of your assault rifle

Yes, and they looked cool and all but since I know DOOM's textures are going to be way cooler, I didn't include them. I'm pretty sure Halo has specular lighting but I'm not sure about bumpmapping. Either way, it's damn pretty.

I thought the art design in Halo was inconsistent. (this is a IMHO, don't flame damnit) It felt like Unreal's syndrome, only worse.

I don't hate Unreal and I don't hate Halo. It's just that the overdose of tones detracted from the great graphics. Too many saturated colors look like a goddamn circus.

Real life's much more pale and monotonous, and I guess that's why games like Quake and Thief look much more appealing to me.

Well let's take a look at several great artists work :

This is just a tiny extract from the gallery at Max3D, just because I didn't bothered to search deeper. As you can see, even the most colorful pics don't use lots of colors beyond 66% saturation, and that's why they look so cool IMO.

In Halo you have this emerald green soldier with a fire-orange colored helmet firing a deep-purple laser in a yellow/green field, surrounded by a cyan-to-blue-to-magenta sky occluded by light/dark blue buildings with exaggerated bumpmaps while the enemies fire their own brand of supercolored beams.

Well it depends what kind of shoot em up it is. the old doom had colorful graphics ( in some levels i think ) and some games look better whit not so much color while others look really good whit colorful graphics. I think Halo looks fine whit all those colors and i hope that Doom3 will have less colorful graphics. By the way that was that whit the avatar pic? was it illegal? if it was i didn't know that and i hopƄe i haven't made you mad.

Doom isn't quite as colourful as, say, Q3A.
While I hate when games look too plain (Quake1 - Real life doesn't look that plain), I disliked how Q3A seemed overly colourful.

Yeah Doom was more colorful, but Q3A had more saturation (mainly because the arenas are supposed to be really bright).

Strange, I don't recall seeing any countries that were all brownish wherever I looked.

Well goddamnit, they fucking had to choose a motif for their game. Carmack was like "2 or 3 base colors, boys, lightmaps need all the variations we can give them". What are you going to use? Orange? Green? Hell no, you're working on a friggin gothic game, you use brown, desaturated blue and grey.

Ok, here are my observations: I've recently tried editing Doom sprites (through wintex) and I found that Doom's palette is quite limited, whereas one short look at Q3A convinces me that many more different colours and colour tones are used for that.

Conclusion: Q3A is more colourful than Doom.

It seems to me that you and I don't "speak the same language".

Well shit, one's at 8 bits and the other at 32 bits. By colorful I mean the color curve looks more like a plain in Doom, while in Q3A it's a Gauss bell, generally peaking in red colors.

I donĀ“t understand why so many people think Quake3 were so remarcably colourful. The only things that are really colourful in Q3 are the ammo boxes. The gothic themed Q3 maps have various shades of brown, with red stained glass windows and red lava, and a yellow or red sky. The space maps are the opposite of colourful, just grey tones and a pitch black sky. Just calling Q3 overdone colourful because of the ammo boxes isnĀ“t very objective IMO.

In opposition to the Quake series, Doom had a strong use of greenish colours in many levels, while the main scheme was grey and beige.

EDIT: just read your last post :D So you are talking about Q3 having a larger colour variety... But I heard many people (UT fans mostly) complain about Q3 beeing candy coloured.

The Provence, in southern France! :) The houses have the same brown stone walls like Q1, thereĀ“s no purple sky normally, but purple lavender fields... a much nicer athmosphere than in Quake though, but I like both places :D

Bah, it's quite obvious that I misunderstand what you're all talking about. Just forget about what I said ok.

So... do we know anything else about D3, or are we still in the dark? I just started looking for info on it :) a more specific release date, perhaps? :D
