The Metal / Rock Music Fans

Recommended Posts

Used to be a huge prog/power metal fan and would listen to nothing but those genres up until recently... Recently the past two weeks or so though I've decided to try a variety of different metal genres out of my comfort zone and have been finding a lot of ones I like. A few of my favorites:

Ayreon
Anthrax
Blind Guardian
Candlemass
Fantomas
Gamma Ray
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Kiuas
Lost Horizon
Megadeth
Metallica
Opeth
Pathfinder
Sodom
Tool
Van Canto

I'm open to any other suggestions though.

I have become very tranquil and happy now that I am old boring.

I sit happy and try listen to Slayer or Pantera and the man is screaming "Your uncle is a cunt full of faggots! SATAN! SATAN! SATAN!" tee hee is silly.

But that is lyrics, the music instrumental is very strong and makes me happy. I listen still to the Black Sabbath, I learned instruments from listening to Black Sabbath and Metallica, and I love Pantera groove. But is Black Sabbath I still love so much, I tear monkey from my neighbor ass when I heavy bass for Iomi.

Since my cd player broke, I've been going through my vinyl collection and having an ongoing binge on 80's speed metal, Nwobhm, and obscure early 90's Scandinavian death metal.

I've been listening to metal music since my mid-teens (so a year or two before I registered here actually), and since then have embraced the metal lifestyle. I am a bit of a genre-nerd, but at the same time I do draw a line somewhere - some so-called 'sub-genres' are just ridiculous.

Currently I mainly listen to older music, as I decided a good place to start finding more great metal music was the very pioneers of the various sub-genres. I've also been to various metal festivals for a few years now (planning on going to both Bloodstock and Hellfest this year so far), and go to concerts every so often.

I like to think that I like a bit of everything metal has to offer. The only genres you could say I dislike (meaning I simply don't listen to them because they don't do anything for me) are nu-metal, glam metal, the "New Wave of American Metal" (the likes of Killswitch Engage, Five Finger Death Punch, Chimaera etc.) most crossover thrash and most grindcore. I also don't particularly like "djent" either. Generally I tend to lean towards "extreme metal".

Yes this was a lot of effort to put together, but I've presently got nothing to do so what the hell.

Traditional metal / hard rock:
- Deep Purple
- Led Zeppelin
- Black Sabbath (seen Ozzy live, almost counts :P)
- Queen (there early-mid '70s work certainly qualifies)
- Judas Priest (seen this band)
- Rainbow
- Dio
- Heaven and Hell

NWOBHM:
- Motorhead (seen this band)
- Saxon
- Iron Maiden
- Diamond Head
- Angel Witch (seen this band)

Power/folk metal:
- Manowar
- Yngwie Malmsteen
- Helloween (seen this band)
- Blind Guardian (seen this band)
- Iced Earth (seen this band)
- Mercyful Fate (musically I don't think they sound all that different from a lot of the NWOBHM, though others would label them as part of the "first wave" of black metal)
- King Diamond (seen this band)
- Demons and Wizards
- Gamma Ray (seen this band)
- Sabaton (seen this band)
- Alestorm (seen this band)
- Falconer
- Eluveitie (seen this band)
- Korpiklaani (seen this band)
- Turisas (seen this band)
- Skyclad

Thrash metal (arguably my favourite sub-genre, though it entirely depends on my mood):

- Anthrax
- Megadeth (seen this band)
- Pantera
- Exodus (seen this band)

- Forbidden
- Stormtroopers of Death
- Flotsam and Jetsam
- Dark Angel
- Heathen
- Toxik
- Sabbat
- Nuclear Assault
- Morbid Saint
- Vio-lence
- Fear Factory (more industrial metal, but I put them here because I don't really listen to any other industrial metal so...)

Death metal:
- Possessed (seen this band)
- Death
- Morbid Angel (seen this band)
- Obituary (seen this band)
- Cannibal Corpse (seen this band)
- Deicide

- Bolt Thrower
- Napalm Death (mainly grindcore but same reason as Fear Factory above)
- Fleshgod Apocalypse

- Anaal Nathrakh (same as Napalm Death above, seen them as well)

Black metal (my other favourite sub-genre):
- Bathory
- Mayhem (seen this band)
- Darkthrone
- Immortal (seen this band)
- Satyricon (seen this band)
- Enslaved (seen this band)
- Gorgoroth (seen this band)
- Emperor
- Dimmu Borgir (seen this band)
- Cradle of Filth (seen this band)

- Primordial (seen this band)
- Dissection
- Belphegor (will be seeing this band later this year)
- Agalloch
- Burzum
- Alcest (seen this band)
- Summoning
- Ulver (most of their work isn't black metal at all, but I guess you could argue they're still philosophically/spiritually black metal)
- Windir
- Shining (seen this band)
- Samael
- Drudkh
- Watain (seen this band)
- Old Man's Child
- Wolves in the Throne Room
- Carpathian Forest
- Blut Aus Nord

- Wodensthrone

- Gojira (seen this band)
- Symphony X (seen this band)
- Evergrey
- Ayreon
- Devin Townsend
- Control Denied
- Periphery (seen this band)
- Star One
- Threshold (seen this band)
- Liquid Tension Experiment
- Office of Strategic Influence

Melodic death metal:
- Amon Amarth (seen this band)
- Amorphis (seen this band)
- Insomnium (seen this band)

Extreme power/folk metal (iffy sub-genre I know, but I think it's the best way to describe the following bands):
- Children of Bodom (seen this band)
- Wintersun (seen this band)
- Ensiferum (seen this band)
- Finntroll (seen this band)
- Moonsorrow (also very progressive metal in a way, also seen this band)
- Equilibrium
- Orphaned Land (seen this band)

I'm also a big '70s progressive rock nerd, but that's an entirely different story.

EDIT: Forget spoilers don't condense the text like they do at the ZDoom forums, sorry for the huge wall of text people!

Also, if you like extreme metal, take a look about Berzerker, Origin and Carcass. (Or did you forgot to list them? :P) Anyway, impressive list.

As for me, I don't really care what type of music I listen, only thing is, is it good. From Blur to ZZ-Top and AC/DC, all top to Meshuggah and Berzerker.

Fun fact: Bolt Thrower's only European concert (for now, according to their tour dates) comes to Finland.
Could I think meself lucky?

I don't know if newer hardcore would be strictly metal per se, but I've been listening to quite a bit of it lately.

Reign Supreme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmBu0JRbqPk0
Hatebreed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozd-T2k6_JE
Terror http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UonmopFossY

Other bands would be Xibalba, Harms Way, Madball, Warhound, and Cruel Hand, along with about a hundred others.

Not a very long list. Roughly ordered in preference. The songs are picked at random.

  1. DragonForce
  2. I AM I - Ex-DragonForce singer ZP Theart's new band. I see a theme.
  3. Sabaton
And I don't know as much of their stuff as I should but I also like what I know of the following (no particular order)Eh...kind of puny when I look at everyone else.

Accept

Heathen
Hollow
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Megadeth
Metallica
Morgana Lefay
Motorhead
Overkill
Pantera

I really need to find more bands that I can get into. Those are my general go-tos for my metal listening needs. Thrash is my favorite, handily. Testament is probably my overall favorite band. I missed them live last night. I was really sick and was forced to stay home. What a shitty night last night was.

YOU BETTA WAWK ON HOME BOI! >:(

My brother lost his copies, and I never bought into their tough guy meat head stuff, their glam metal era (before Cowboys From Hell) wasn't too bad though. They had a few okay songs back then.

Some songs off the albums I've purchased lately.

Metal (especially one that takes its essence towards extreme realms) plays significant role in my musical tastes, though I don't bother confining myself with particular genres and bands and like things in wide range from avantgarde black metal (Deathspell Omega ftw!) to The Prodigy. And I also don't consider myself metalhead, as well as someone else. I just listen to what I like and don't care much about anything genre- or image-related.

Anyway, my latest discovery. I'm not a huge fan of stuff like post-metal or atmospheric rock, but this shit definitely hooked me up. Like late Anathema but with more density in their sound and noticeable influences from ambient, electronic, tribal music and so on. Cool thing actually.

Atoma - Highway

Speaking of favs - there's a band that completely distorted my reality several years ago and quickly became the most adorable one. I dare to say this is the most beautiful and tempting thing ever happened to extreme metal. I'll put one song here. Careful, may cause strong addiction.

Have you heard a band called Torture Division? Same members, although the one came across as a bit arrogant on an Indian metal forum I used to be a moderator on when he said they were the best band in the world, it is still some cool stuff. It's more straight forward death metal in the vein of Grave, and their whole discography is online for free with their permission.
