Electro/breakbeat music - help needed right now!

Recommended Posts

A'ight people, listen up! I am in desperate need of some electro music for some school project. So please, fellow doomers, name some bands like Anthony Rother or Kraftwerk, or pretty much anything that has that minimal style to it, you know, the beat and all that. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: It would be better if the music is a combination between electro and breakbeat. IMO the combination is great.

Right up my alley:

Imatran Voima
Cybernet Systems
Drexciya (and dopplereffekt/japanese telecom/arpanet/L.A.M./The Other People Place, etc...of their projects)
Legowelt (Gladio, Squadra Blanco, Polarius, Psycic Stewardess, and other of his projects.)
Orgue Electronique
Youngsters
The Hasbeens
I-F
Mr. Velcro Fastener
Tec-Roc
IBM
FPU
Mandroid
Electronome

that's mostly all newer stuff (late 90's to today)
Legowelt (Danny Wolfers and his aliases) and Drexciya (and all of their side-projects/aliases) are two of my faves and influence my own music greatly.
if you need/want 80's electro (and some 70's weirdness) just shout

Thinking outside of the box here, but if you're into dub stuff and 8-bit sounds, I recently found this pretty cool dub artist with minimal electric, 8-bit sounds, Tapes.
If you're using Spotify, here's a link to a pretty cool tune of theirs. A bit modern, but minimal if that was a key thing you were looking for.

Other stuff:
The Knife
808 State
Dunderpatrullen

Autechre
Future Sound of London
Fluke
Orbital
The Orb
Daft Punk
Prodigy
Underworld
Photek
Amorphous Androgynous
Apollo 440
Meat Beat Manifesto
Tangerine Dream

Do you want me to keep going?

Nope. Thanks all for your help! This is enough for now, should keep me occupied for awhile...

Guy asks for 'electro' and people recommend aphex twin, future sound of london and the prodigy?? WTF? Those are 3 very different styles right there...

yeah, that's what i was gonna say. people are just posting electronic music.
electro is a specific sub-genre...and not today's "electro-house"

all of the stuff i posted is considered "electro" (or greatly influenced by early electro, freestyle and italo.)

P.S. i really should check out some of Rother's new stuff...he used to be one of my favorite producers but i lost interest after his style changed so dramatically with Popkiller.

Yeah, I thought I was the only one. The Kraftwerk-style beats he uses captured my mind from the moment I heard Redlight District (lyrics in that one are also WICKED).

Prodigy is NOT authentic electro. It's DnB.

The Prodigy isn't DnB either. Some of their very early stuff had some jungle influences but the relationship to DnB is a bit thin. Listen to lots of pure jungle and DnB back to back and the styles are really quite different.

The Prodigy is... The Prodigy. They take bits and pieces from various different genres and throw them into a musical food blender.

The Prodigy's older stuff is more or less what you could call breakbeat hardcore, i think. the later stuff was described with something called "big beat" but fuck knows what that even encompasses. genres in electronic music is a huge mess.

H.A.R.R.Y. was\is a synthpop band from Brazil, I think. Cool stuff, their Fairy Tales LP is epic.

Thanks for pointing that out. There's also this guy Karl Bartos, I just found out, he still does music, though there haven't been any new albums in the last couple of years. I personally prefer more breakbeat-like types of electro, so ...

Well, it sounded like DnB to me, but maybe it's just me.

The only Electro music I listen to is stuff like Agonoize, Suicide Commando, and aktive.hate, and I don't think that'll be fitting for a school project X)

Okay, fine, I lied. The school project was just a lame fucking excuse. Truth is I just want some new electronic music, but really dunno where to look. I'm -cough- currently downloading some label called Y4K cause I heard it's cool, but other than that... no ideas.

Ah :P The stuff I mentioned is in the Aggro-tech range of Industrial Electro music. Usually darker melodies, heavy drum beats, and harsh, distorted vocals (usually similar to Black Metal vocals).

Hell yeah, that's the shit. BTW, I just listened to some Agonoize, and I swear, my first thought was: 'Fuck yeah, I'm gonna grab my Victorinox rite now, and start cutting myself, cuz I H8 MYSAAAALF... ' Jokes aside, top notch music, sorta like Sonic Mayhem, and I've been lookin for that for quite awhile.

You make music? I used to have this hobby too, but nothing good came out. Perhaps you could show me your work, and I show you mine? Just tell me your soudcloud or whatever you use... :)

Also, yeah. Some 70s weirdness would be cool. Just don't name Stockhausen or others like these. Some obscure artists would be good. YEES, I KNOW I'M BEING A MUSIC GEEK, BUT whatever...

in that case...this album is kinda wacky, but it was recorded in 1975 and sounds like it could have been recorded 20-30 years later by one of the detroit guys or maybe one of the bunker records/hague guys:

also, here is a great track from imatran voima, if you are just interested in the sync-beat stuff:

I take it you're listening to "I Against Me" X)
Sonic Mayhem goes all over the place, so I find it hard to compare, but glad you like the style!

Admittedly I just went down my list in itunes and named some of my more favorite names that fall under the "techno/electro" umbrella.

However, I'd suggest doing a youtube search for MTV's Amp (from back when MTV actually played music in the 90's). They cover a wide variety of a lot of the "electro" music that I enjoy. Keep in mind some of the videos are blocked by country on copyright grounds though...

Some time during the latter half of the 00's Electro became the new blanket term for electronic music, much like Techno was in the 90's. Must have stemmed from Electro House, which really doesn't have much in common with Electro nor does it sound notably different from ye token European vanilla house music since the 90's. Probably music press and marketing dudes desperately trying to sell old things as new and exciting again.

I particularly enjoy Sbassship, and most things from the Dominance Electricity label

Opolopo if you crave more funk-inspired electro.

Edit: Christ, how could I forget fucking Paul Hardcastle? If I ever got into making Electro again, I'd be ripping off his style for sure.

I'd definitely vouch for Orbital...particularly their earlier stuff. (it's all quality, but their later stuff doesn't match the purpose of this thread as well)
DMX Krew are also worth a look, their stuff ranges from 80's breakbeat (Paul Hardcastle-esque) to disco and experimental.

More precisely, the commercialisation of electro house via our national radio station, Radio 1. (same thing happened with dubstep at the end of the 00's)

IMO Drexciya is epic coolness. Yup, comes really close to what I needed. Thanks mate, and thank you all for providing me with 5 GiG of fresh, cool music! No more booooore!

drexciya is just really interesting. aquatic-electro-jazz/funk minimal techno.
they have a pretty detailed backstory/mythology surrounding their music. the drexciiyans are a race of underwater beings descended from the babies of slaves thrown overboard from slave ships. yeah..

Ima just gonna go ahead and post my favorite electro-synth band, irrespective of whether they fit the 'precise' musical genre that we are going for. In terms of electronic music, for my money, these guys are doing it pretty awesome.

Their 'backstory' sounds more like a bad trip to me. Too much weed, too much *tsk-tsk*
