Mitt Romney once vowed to block pornography by installing a filter on every U.S. PC

I'm not religious, what do you mean? If anything, I am vehemently against most aspects of religious practice.

How about the fact that he used to dress up in a police uniform and pull over drivers?

Yeah, 'cause Daily KOS sounds like a really reputable source for news and information.

Considering the man's religious background, how can anyone find this surprising?

Funny part is that while Utah is the state with the highest population of Mormons, it's also the state with the highest consumption rate of pornography. He's probably a huge porn fiend himself.

Considering the man's occupation and a history of those with a similar, political hardline-stance, how could anyone find - aaaaah, forget it. Once you think about the polygamy aspect of (certain sects of) Mormonism, that's a statistic that makes perfect sense to me.

To be fair, in all but the FLDS cult in Texas, Mormonism has not practiced polygamy in over 100 years; roughly less than 20 years after its inception by Joe Smith.

Actually, as a Utah resident there are plenty of polygamists here. I see them every day.

Porn has caused nothing but emotional and mental torture in my life, it's a stupid vice and an extremely difficult one to get rid of at that. I would have no problem with Romney going through with such a plan (note that I am not affiliated with any political party).

Get some counseling then. The government shouldn't be getting involved in what you can or can't do on the internet because you have a porn addiction.

I think something is bad, so the government should make it illegal

It's amazing how many people seem to adopt this kind of thinking. You might not be religious but they're certainly the worst offenders.

"Drugs are bad, so they should be made illegal"

"Homosexuality is against my beliefs, so gays shouldn't be allowed to marry"

"I'm a Catholic, so I think condoms should be banned"

"I find abortion immoral, so nobody should be able to have one"

etc.

You can campaign against something without taking away peoples' right to decide for themselves. It seems much of the time the "cure" turns out to be far worse than the problem it's trying to prevent.

I lived in Utah for about a total of six years (3 years when I was very young, and another 3 fairly recently), even dated an LDS chick for the better part of two years, and I can safely say I've never met a polygamist Mormon. You are either mistaken or you live by some FLDS facility because plural marriage has been illegal since 1890.

The Mormon church is by far not a beacon of good, but it's not fair to pick on them for something that's not true when there's plenty of garbage associated with them that IS.

Of course just about everybody I meet and the majority of my friends are LDS, but no matter where I am I see these people, whether it be at walmart, at a gas station, etc. Usually it's a group of a few women and their daughters. I don't have anything against them personally, but I do see them quite often, whether I'm in St George, Cedar City, Richfield, Salt Lake, Provo, Orem, etc. etc. etc.

I guess I'm just a selfish prick then, sorry.

Or don't think through to the ends.

I bet there's a lot of people that enjoy pornography on TV. Then there's the pornography producers, who are making revenue, and paying for the actors, cameramen, editor, designers, etc etc that's employed under them, and everyone they buy things for to support their business (electric companies, equipment manufacturers, couch/bed makers lol) so it's a fair bit of economic chunk there. They don't force me to watch their stuff, so they can go on enjoying what they like so long as it isn't harming anyone.

I have not much sympathy for the porn industry or porn addicts, but the idea to put filters on all computers in a country is horrible. Once you've got mandatory software (or hardware or whatever solution would hypothetically be implemented) on all computers filtering the content that people are allowed to see, then you can use it to filter more than just porn. How about copyright violation? The anti-piracy lobby will jump on these filters! And terrorism? Now here's today's perfect boogeyman. And, say, these guys protesting about some unpopular policy that the gov't is pushing forward, they're kinda like terrorists, right? Let's silence them with our magic filters! Yaaaaay!

It's sad that almost all of today's bills or regulations have an (intended) Pandora's effect. It's like that NASA internet filtration system they built to monitor potential terrorists -- you just know that will be used to randomly picking out armchair copyright violators.

Yeah, that sounds like a much more logical use of filters than trying to ban porn that isn't necessarily illegal.

They might not be practicing it now, but it's still canon Mormon scripture in Doctrine & Covenants 132. This has never been rescinded, so according to official Mormon scripture, there will be polygamy in heaven, whether you like it or not.

Yeah, but it's easier to trick people when using morally hot-topic subjects to push an agenda. The idea is to get the bill through the door, and that's when the real agenda starts. I just think Mitt is slightly ignorant to how many people use pornography.

Much like here in Canada, the conservative party is trying to record and monitor our web activities through our ISPs. They used pedophilia as a hot-topic issue to get the bill through the door. But we all know why they want this bill: cops would love to monitor anybodies internet activities without warrant, and copyright holders would love to abuse this as well. Luckily, Canada isn't as stupid as they think we are and there has been quite an outrage. Right to the point where the conservatives called the majority of Ontarians pedophile supporters in a fit of butt-hurt.
