3 - Keep it in the middle of Doom & realistic... how about realistically Doom speed?

Auto Aim (Doom 1) / No Auto Aim (Doom 3)
5 - We have mouses and WASD these days... we want height differences so no auto aim, but maybe the option for those who want it

Player has run Stamina / Infinite run stamina
4 - Infinite within reason, definitely not the Doom 3 type

Jump / no Jump
1 - Of course! This is 3D!

Metal Soundtrack / Ambient Soundtrack
3 - A mix between the two, just like the original

Darkness / bright
3 - Depending on level or area really, this is going to be a modern game so it should be done in realistically way i.e Light for daytime in the streets, dark in a cave etc

1 - Bring on the apocalypse... Probably good to take stroll through hell during part of the game

3 - A bit of both... should be going through devastated cities, forests, mountains, caves, a hole to hell

3, I'd like to say no for classic reasons, but now I get a bit bugged when I can't reload a gun, mostly because I like hearing all the sounds and watching the animations play out.

2. Hell. I like fantastic places. Mars has already been explored, and Earth is boring.

Vast landscapes / Clusterphobic areas

4. Claustrophobic, but let some yards and outdoors here and there.

4. Only require oxygen for hazardous areas, like in traditional Doom.

3. Depends on what shotgun we're talking about. I like it to be short range, though, but I'm choosing moderate here.

5. The difference is insignificant here. I chose 5 because it adds a little challenge without ruining anything.

2. Yes, but less cheesy looking than in Doom 3. If it looks like an assault rifle, I'm happy.

1. Yes, but keep its battery limited and turn the player into a monster-alerting beacon.

2. Like I said above. No, recharge time is as bad as health or ammo regeneration. Make the player look for batteries (precedent game: Star Wars Dark Forces)

4. Tend towards scary and suspenseful, but also be action-packed (be balanced).

Story Based / Level based

4. Focus on levels, but try to also integrate a story arc to make it more interesting for non-hardcore players.

Med Kits / Cover regeneration

1. Medikits and other items that have to be found. Regeneration is passive and bad.

Secrets & Exploration / A focused path

3. Balanced. Make it both linear and exploratory, duh.

Living people along the way / You are the only survivor

8. Mostly it's only you, but have a chance to meet NPCs like civilians or allies, if not even bots who do NOT tag along with you but choose their ways.

5. They're not different, except that the latter has iron legs, which are not significant. But I'd rather continue where Doom 3 left, than undecidedly restart with classic Doom

1. Hmm, this time is 1. Doom 3 has the Hell Knight. Meanwhile there's a custom Baron of Hell for Doom 3 that HAS horns, so the new Baron should have horns too :)

Quests / No Quests but Keys and exit

1. Quests. Keys are obsolete even in classic Doom where they can be replaced by switches. They only made sense in Wolf3D or Descent where they were the only way to unlock areas. In Doom they're vestigial but people put them in anyway as a convention.

Stealth (sneaking past enemies) / All guns (killing everything in sight)

4. Mostly gunfighting, but put the odd stealth level in.

Puzzles / No Puzzles

2. Yes, but not overwhelmingly so.

Gravity Gun / No Gravity Gun

5. No. Leave that sort of ability to magic. It gives you too much power and only makes sense if everything around is as high tech as the grabber.

4. Apart from fists (weak) and chainsaws (repeated), also provide the player with an intermediary melee object that can break.

2. Yes. Fourth-wall easter eggs are nice.

2. I already said yes to NPCs including allies. HOWEVER, they have to be more likable than in Quake 4, or not always standing in your way...

3. Balance, okay?

4. Don't focus on underwater passages, this is not Quake. But do add waist-deep currents that can carry you, for challenge's sake (again a precedent is Dark Forces).

5. Weak spots unfortunately remind me of cheesy predictable console bosses and make no sense with zombies and the like. They're supposed to be horrific, not human-like. They should not have weak spots, for crying out loud.

3. Have an inventory, but don't limit it by weight. Limit instead the lifetime of objects in your inventory, so you don't meet the boss all packed with supplies.

3 - A balance between both, without having me grab the unreleased Radeon from their tech lab to run this stuff.

Water: Has depth and is swimable / Has no depth and you walk on it
4 - No submarine missions please. (btw, I picked Mars, so how does this work)

Now for crazy stuff that you might ask wtf?

Imps shoot fireballs: In a straight line and they go forever (Doom 1) / At an arc where it eventually falls (Doom 3)
2 - Slight arc

Some enemies require you to shoot: in weak spots (head, back) / Shoot it wherever
5 - HEADSHOT. HEADSHOT. HEADSHOT. What about the pinky? It's a giant head.

Inventory system based on weight of weapons & ammo & items / No inventory, just guns, ammo and keys
4 - Should slow down if carrying any big obstacles

Sniper rifle for headshots / Hell no

Flame Thrower / Hell no

Rocket Jumping / No Rocket Jumping
3 - Secrets only I say.

When you die in a level in single player: Respawn at the start / Restart the level completely (forcing you to load a save game)
5 - Hard for a reason.

Explosive weapons: Pipe bombs (Doom 3) & grenades & Rocket launcher / Only rocket launcher
3 - As long as there no frag grenades.

Poisoning types of enemies that do damage for a few seconds / Hell no

Disfiguring enemies that affects how they move (shooting off legs / arms) / Shoot it and kill it

Zombies have: Randomized clothes and randomized facial features / a few different looks
1 - That'd be pretty neat actually. Just nothing bizarre, like clowns and astronauts coming from Wendys.

When a zombie does not have a gun: it runs at you / it walks at you
2 - I doubt that fat guy can outrun a 64mph marine.

SOME Enemies: Flank you / Come straight toward you

Absolutely, that would be a great spectacle to watch with next-gen hardware, not to mention it could be used as a novel way to introduce a stealth element or to force the player to conserve ammo.

This would be great too, it would emphasize the need for Doom 4 to have non-linear elements. This could be used as a way to challenge players; exploring a seemingly treacherous area might yield interesting results.

"Easy to use included map editor?"
I've heard complaints about Doom 3's editor and some of these new engines seem so daunting it's scary to imagine modding with them. Doom 4's editor should be easy enough to make competent, interesting designs, but have enough features to really push the limit on design.

I've updated and been updating the survey.

Thank you so much to everyone who has played along. The different outcomes based on exit in level. Secret exits and the easy to include map editor I can't imagine someone saying hell no to something they might never use or even know is there.
