lazygecko Posted August 11, 2012 http://kotaku.com/5933919/paul-steed-artist-on-wing-commander-and-quake-series-dies There are no real details at the moment beyond what Jace Hall has said. He seems to have been in good health so this was really sudden and unexpected. Like others at id, Paul was a pretty prolific figure in the industry. 0 Share this post Link to post
DoomUK Posted August 11, 2012 :( Anyone know exactly what he did on Quake/II? 0 Share this post Link to post

Doom_Dude Posted August 11, 2012 Oh that's sad news. R.I.P. Paul Steed. 0 Share this post Link to post
NiTROACTiVE Posted August 11, 2012 I was never a huge fan of Quake (although I'm interested in the game and I would like to get it someday) and I didn't know much about Paul Steed, but it's a shame we lost a great artist for video games like Wing Commander and Quake. He did look in great shape and we'll never know how he died unless if they do an autopsy. My condolences go to his friends and family. RIP dude. 0 Share this post Link to post
Vorpal Posted August 11, 2012 He was a modeler, maybe textures too? He was quite active in quake engine modeling websites/forums from what I remember, providing info as well as his own "fan" contributions (in quotes because he did this while still an id employee, which was really cool). 0 Share this post Link to post
wildweasel Posted August 11, 2012 Paul Steed was a texture/skin artist, to my recollection. Quake 3 Arena's player skins are very much in his style, and I think he probably also contributed to Daikatana (I may be wrong). He has a very distinct "tech flesh" style. 0 Share this post Link to post

Xaser Posted August 12, 2012 This makes me a sad person -- though he wasn't Doom-era id, I definitely recall his name from the Quake credits. Here's to hoping his art graces the (hopefully not too Lovecraftian) afterlife. 0 Share this post Link to post
Reisal Posted August 12, 2012 It's a shame for him to die so young, it makes me wonder what the cause of death was.. 0 Share this post Link to post
Megalyth Posted August 12, 2012 I have a lot of respect for him because he "took one for the team" in a sense, pushing to bring Doom back to the development table at the cost of his own job. You helped make one of my dreams a reality, you won't be forgotten. 0 Share this post Link to post
PRIMEVAL Posted August 12, 2012 Quake is one of my most favorite games. RIP :( 0 Share this post Link to post

Harmata Posted August 12, 2012 Was incredibly skilled low-poly modeler. Rest in peace and stay golden, bro. 0 Share this post Link to post

david_a Posted August 13, 2012 I remember Something Awful mocking him incessantly because of his fondness of modeling women with enormous juggs. He was on the cast of SMARTY MAN GAEM DESIGNEAR "SURVIROR", for example. The only id game he worked on was Quake 3, as far as I know. 0 Share this post Link to post
