printz Posted August 15, 2012 Do you people archive and backup your own Doom wad resources in revision control repositories (such as Git)? I've found it very convenient; it helps me keep everything ordered in one place, it serves as back-up and as safety in case I do a mistake. Bitbucket seems to offer free private repositories as long as they're not controlled by larger teams. 0 Share this post Link to post
glenzinho Posted August 15, 2012 My Doom stuff stays unzipped on my laptop hard drive but I have a backup on my external hard drive. 0 Share this post Link to post
Enjay Posted August 15, 2012 Any projects I work on these days get backed up at the end of every day by me sticking it into a zip file with the date ( in ISO 8601 format) as part of the file name. I use the comments field of the zip to describe what the changes were. 0 Share this post Link to post
printz Posted August 15, 2012 I was talking specifically about using repositories (e.g. SVN) normally used for programming, but in this case for modding. Main problem is that most of the free ones are for open source use. But when you make a megaWAD, you prefer to keep it closed. Few repos will let you for free and for unlimited space. 0 Share this post Link to post
gemini09 Posted August 15, 2012 I should back-up my project WIP, but I don't. It's been in development since 2009. If a crash occurs, it was not meant to be, and I will kill myself. If all goes well - these fucking hard-drives SHOULD last some time, after all; the project will be complete and I will have it backed-up online. But making back-ups all the time, is just something I can't be bothered with. I should perhaps look into an automatic back-up system ala RAID that mirrors everything on one HDD on another 0 Share this post Link to post
schwerpunk Posted August 15, 2012 I haven't created a large enough library of resources I would consider worth saving. Though when I do upload something, I usually use Dropbox. 0 Share this post Link to post

Hehehe famous last words! ;-) Safer to just back up online now and every time you invest a lot of time working on the map. There are lots of places (file sharing, free web hosting, etc.) you can upload files to... 0 Share this post Link to post
