Shrine2.wad on maximum doom

Recommended Posts

Has anyone played this? Or the shrine.wad that it was converted from?

It's a neat little level because of one of the design choices. Several wall textures are monster frames. I mistook them for actual enemies from a distance every now and then, wasting some ammo. There's actually one point with a similar element involving a cyberdemon. It's a great laugh. I don't know if it was intentional, or if this is in the original shrine.wad that it was converted from, but it's indeed a cool effect that I only ever seen used once.

Oh, I remember this wad, I think Guest from Russian Doom Community made a review of it. :) Cool and funny idea with monster textures, works surprisingly well.

You mean this one? Yes, sure; the author was pretty well known at the time.

As for the effect, it was used in number of wads in this kind of way. Scott F. Crank used it in a few of his wads, and Alex Mayberry to a lesser degree in map05 of pdgate. And probably others. I guess the pioneering wad in this respect was Unholy Trinity, though it was used in a different way there.

BTW, unlike many of the Doom2 conversions on Maximum Doom, Shrine2.wad was actually made by the author of the original wad. He released it 3rd/4th November 1994 at the CompuServe Gamers Forum (those are the date-stamps of the files I have from back then). The file currently in the archive is unaltered apart from the date-stamp.

Shrine of the Warriors is pretty cool. Apart from what's been mentioned, I really liked the spectre room.

Well, while I'm at it, there's also nghtmr2.wad with a cool effect. There's 3 fat steps in one part of Map01, the lowest one has a sort of reflective effect. It's actually a mapping flaw (also seen in other parts of the map, but it doesn't look "reflective" in those).

I should probably change the topic title to cool wads in maximum doom.

TEST2KIL.WAD by Matthew G. Hooper is an earlier (July '94) example of the same technique. Incidentally, there's an auto-converted D2 version of it in Maximum DOOM - TEST2KI2.WAD.
