Steam group for doom

My Steam name is the same as my doomworld SN. I'm unfortunately relatively new here (well not really; I found this SN I apparently made years ago while trying to sign up again -- just inactive), but I have been DooMing since the game's release and am desperate for some good multiplayer.

What is the use of a steam-group for a game that a priori is non-steam?
