Stupid Goddamn Motherfucking East Coast

Recommended Posts

Well, shit.

Devin Townsend isn't touring the East Coast at all. The closest he's coming is that bigassed show in Atlanta in November. He will be playing stuff from the new SYL and the other new project while he's there, so I don't see how the fuck I can miss it. If I miss it I'd better be dead or in prison or something.

In other news, I'll most likely be seeing Korn in June as well. Should be a nice, quiet show with a respectable crowd and a moderate volume level.

Or a screamfest with a thousand or so cockmongers and bass so loud the air will jack me off.

Either way, really. =)

In other news, the Strokes and the White Stripes are inarguably the sorriest excuse for rock'n'roll next to Limp Bizkit.

Further going against what you may have read elsewhere, Virtua Fighter 4 for the PS2 does not reinvent a motherfucking thing. It's Virtua Fighter 2 with prettier graphics and that's about it.

The control is the same, generic.

The sound effects are the same, fm synthesis cheese movie cuts.

The music is the same, shit so bad it doesn't even qualify as a porno groove.

The game physics are the same. There are one or two new little features but overall this game plays pathetic. Apparantly it also plays on the moon because the gravity in this game needs to be just about doubled.

The AI is even the same. You can STILL pretty much beat this game with Jacky's double roundhouse kick and random guessing when it fails.

The graphics, while featuring TWO levels that don't look like ass, are a massive conglomeration of jaggies and stupidity. Remember those low-poly models from 1995 arcade machines? Well, just picture them tesselated and throw on a new, badly done texture and you pretty much got this game in your head. The animations are STILL obviously hand done as well. When you've played so many 3D fighters done with motion capture this just looks like everyone has a broom up their ass and they're all dancing like those capoera fucknoodles in Only The Strong.

Sega ought to be fucking ashamed. They have a LOT they can fix before they haul this sorry piece of shit over to a superior console, most notably, the graphics.

Konami didn't do fuckall to the horrible graphics in Silent Hill 2 for the X-Box.

I don't give a fuck what anyone says. A constant motion blur effect (not even FSAA really) with tons of smoke/fog/filmgrain everywhere does NOT make shitty lowres graphics look nice. It makes them look like shitty lowres graphics with my glasses off and about ten Caronas on. TEH FYOTURE IS NOWE!!!!1

There's no doubt that RE:CV for DC stomps the living FUCK out of the PS2 version in terms of graphics. Same goes for DOA2. Now we're seeing it reversed, where companies are porting games to a BETTER system but are too fucking lazy to redo the graphics aspect of it so it doesn't look retarded.

I mean, shit. At this rate I wouldn't be surprised to see Doom ported to the Gamecube straight from the GBA version, without a single thing changed in the graphics department.

That's how bad these fucking games look.

Oh, and Virtua Fighter 4 may have 4000 badly animated moves with names like SHINGUA TUA NO LINGA PUNTO ME COW that all pretty much look the same (badly, just grab the bone to the skeleton and drag it straight in a direction) but Dead or Alive 3 has a better combat system, faster combat, it's easier to learn and much better for multiplay, the AI is 100x better, and oh yeah, it doesn't look like ass either. It also has that little thing called gravity.

Seriously.

It's 2002.

Sega just released a highly anticipated game with gravity like the secret level to the shareware episode of Quake. It's that fucking bad. I'm not kidding.

I also read an interview with Miyamoto in my local fucking newspaper, in which he claims it's too early for Internet gaming on a console and thus keyed me into the delay (or drop) of the net attachments for the Gamecube.

With 10% of the US in broadband, I think that Internet gaming on consoles isn't a good idea right now. Playing fast paced competitive games like racing or fighting with high pings is just going to drive people fucking batty (100x so if they've never played net games on a 'puter).

Duke3D on my Saturn has netplay, actually. It utilizes the 33.6 modem attachment that was very, very shortlived. Then the Dreamcast had a built in 56k. Anyone remember SegaTV for the Genesis? Holy shit, Sega has really been behind this idea for a long time... and all of their attempts have fell through pretty badly in the grand scheme of things. There's only a few moderate success stories on the Dreamcast, and none before that.

Besides, it's just another useless feature. There's tons of useless features in games right now, most of them pretty. NO ONE FUCKING CARES. Make the games fun or flip hamburgers. Feed me another Max Payne and I'll strangle you with your own entrails.

I also managed to snag a copy of Bloody Roar Primal Fury for my Gamecube. The models aren't quite as good as the ones on the PS2 version but otherwise the game is completely superior, and thankfully, the biggest change is in the AI department. There's still a few times when the CPU will cheat through moves, throw out combos long enough to kill you twice and generally unbalance the hell out of the game but they've been toned way, way down. It's no DOA3 but it'd be a damn fun weekend.

I'd also like to take this moment to clearly state that vehicular deathmatch games are fucking gay. Quit making them. Instead, make good old fashion deathmatch games with vehicular options (vehicles only, vehicles available).

While I'm thinking of Cel Damage, I'd like to state that Cell Shading is probably the single graphical achievement in videogames that was introduced in the last five years that has actually impressed me. I want a LOT more cell shaded videogames, and not anymore stupidass inline graffiti fag tossing. I'd randomly assault gold medalists at the Special Olympics for a cell shaded FPS.

Please don't suggest something like cell shaded Quake. I mean a game built from the ground up on the concept so it's done right.

Q: Hey, you know what's better than winning a gold medal at the Special Olympics?
A: Not being a retard.

I'm also forced to ask... why in the name of God hasn't there been a Doom port yet that supports 32 bit software rendering and jpeg patches? Jesus Christ, it drives me fucking insane everytime I play around with texture editing. Working under a forced pallete is bad enough but when it's as poorly done as Doom's it's downright frustrating. Combined with ZDoom's scalable textures (hires) it'd make for one hell of a mod.

Here's another question... PRBoom's midi is done through Timidity, right? ZDoom supports it now too. So why haven't some Doomers gotten together and made a Doom-engine game focused patch set just for Timidity... for people that only use it to play these games? I'd guess that a well done sample set using only the instruments found in the original midis would be under 15mb... it'd be about 25 if it's done on top of the existing EAWPats set for the complete waveset.

Here's another question... it's clear that some of the features in these latest ports were borrowed from recent deathmatch games. That's a good idea. Here's another: random taunting.

When you die, the killer's custom icon appears with a box next to it. It's plastered right in the middle of your screen.

Custom icons would be like 64x64 or something, and none could animate.

Next to the icon would be a random taunt, taken from a list that YOU FILL OUT in your cfg file.

Any of you deathmatchers out there think that'd be a nifty idea or a humongous waste of time... much like my random tangent thread #412. Have a nice day.

Because JPEGs are worthless shit.

I agree with you on pretty much everything there. All that when I was deathmatching in Quake II with my friend.

Some good points there...seriously the gravity in VF4 is like the moon? Stupid programming is all it boils down to. And dumb planning.

I'll just have to try it for myself...I have VF3 on DC, and I thought it was a pretty good game overall...

Preach on, brother! I'd much rather see PNGs or TGAs make it as the common texture format of choice. TGAs are easy to code for (took me two days from the ground up) and PNGs have an absolute assload of sweet features, most notably:

1) Excellent compression
2) Full alpha channel
3) Support for GIF animation style
4) They're not GIFs

Seriously, if you were to make a JPEG of an image and a PNG of the same, the PNG would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 200x smaller, generally speaking.

HAHAHHAHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAh

The PNG is lossless. Compress a no-adjacent-pixel-is-the-same render and you'll see it reaches BMP-like sizes. JPGs are nice for short-wave detail but bumps get a little softened in the process. Isolated bright pixels tend to be toned down.

NEW SYL STUFF!

When is Devin coming to Europe?

VF4 is still better than any Tekken ever made anyway.

I want an XBox.

Not using logic connectors between sentences rocks.

Aardappel's Cube engine uses JPEGs for the textures.

Aardappel is better than you.

TGA's are the way to go, true, if you don't care about file sizes.

Aardappel is better than you.

Aardappel is "potato" in Dutch. Heh.

Bah, use BMPs and let the friggin video card do the compression. I trust in no format but good old BMP for my stuff. And quite frankly with todays RAM and HD limits it's not that much of a problem.

I'm curious. Did the name 'Devin' come from someone fucking around with 'Kevin'?

Hmm could someone tell me why BMPs are only ever used in ms OSs? My first instinct was that they were a proprietry format, but since they are so utterly basic I'd be suprised if even MS filed a patent on them.

NEW SYL STUFF!

I KNOW!

When is Devin coming to Europe?

He just wrapped up his big European tour nimrod. You have HevyDevy.com in your sig but apparantly you don't check it for tourdates. No matter, he didn't even play any Terria material on that tour... he didn't have time to learn a new set so he says.

VF4 is still better than any Tekken ever made anyway.

I can fashion a better fighter than Tekken out of two empty packs of cigarettes, that doesn't make two empty packs of cigarettes worth playing with.

I want an XBox.

I don't blame you. Get DOA3. Play survival. Get 1st place. Enter your name as David's Box or whatever the hell your name is. Now with that saved, turn off your X-Box. Turn it back on. Play survival again. Get 1st place again, enter your name as EIN. That's right, EIN. Now he's playable. He kinda sucks but he's in a TRENCHCOAT so that's cool enough. You can get 1st place again and enter your actual nickname but there's not much point.

I didn't do this. When I network my X-Box it's known on the network as EIN. I wish I woulda known beforehand. =P

Not using logic connectors between sentences rocks.

What does that have to do with raping BBG in the ear?

Mew.

In other news, for LOSSLESS 24 bit images you can use bmp, tga, or png. PNG would have the smallest filesize over the other two.

You can use jpegs with a quality of 1 and they'll look 99% perfect, and they'll be HELLA small.

However, nowadays, it'd be better to use a real 32 bit format... PNG would be excellent for this... but anyone ever looked at the size of a Photoshop image? What's wrong with the PSD format? IconXP uses that format to make 32 bit icons with an alpha channel (the icons on my desktop blend so well into my desktops =) so why can't any other program use psd?

The European tour was amazing ... The Terria songs went over really well with the audiences singing especially loudly to Earth Day.

The PSD format is good, in the sense that it supports full alpha channels as well as layers, but the file size balloons pretty quick, if the resolution gets high enough. Anything over 150 dpi and you're dealing with at least 5 megs just to keep it open.

Shit I forgot about that line. I remember reading something about playing heavier songs with Fear Factory and their newer songs when they headlined.

There was something in one of those newsletters with people bitching about the lack of new songs though. I should probably not talk about things I read when I spent a week after I read them stoned and drunk. =P

PSD saves Layers' names, properties, blending modes, alpha channels, secondary masks, styles, printing properties, selections, splines, raw binary images, off-the-canvas regions, details and watermarks.

Lot's of junk.

I see your point.

Well, what about stripping that shit out? Just copying the image itself?

Using only a single layer 32 bit image with a little extra information as possible? Would that have any size benefits to png or not?

Yeah I remember that. I think what went down was that there were actually two tours, the first of which didn't include new material. I remember reading the promise that the second one would include new material however. I think both of them were European tours too.

That sounds reasonable. PSD 3.0 was pretty simple as I recall. It's an amazing format to code shaders now that I realize.

It's just that alpha channels don't really need to be embedded with the file. All painting programs have limited functions when it comes to alpha manipulation, so sometimes is better to just make a new grayscale bmp and tell the engine to use that instead.

Most filters and tools don't give a rat ass about the A channel. Their math is limited to RGB.
