Sharessa Posted March 28, 2002 My ancestors all worked for the U.S. government in som way...there were ancestors in every national war (at least since the civil war, where they fought on both sides) up through my grandpa who fought in WWII. I've also had a ton of relatives work for the CIA and stuff. My uncle even anylises satelite photos and crap. My grandpa also ran for state treasurer or something in Oregon with in the Socialist party a few years ago. Otherwise, there isn't anyone famous in my family. 0 Share this post Link to post
NiGHTMARE Posted March 29, 2002 The most famous person I'm descended from is William the Conqueror, but then again so are several hundred thousand other people. I'm a direct descendant of Catherine Parr, one of Henry VIII's wives; obviously this is from her second marriage I'm a descendant of an Archbishop of Canterbury from the 17th century who was locked up in the Tower of London for treason ;) . I'm also a descendant of an Archbishop of Westminster (who apparently didn't really do very much, but his name, Archbishop Sancroft, is inscribed on one of the walls in Westminster Abbey, if you ever go there). These two just shows you that priests' attitudes to sex was a bit different in those days :) My Great Great Grandfather was Joseph Swan, who invented the lightbulb before Edison did, but of course it was Edison who got all the credit (see http://www.maxmon.com/1878ad.htm). Like Danarchist, I've got quite a bit of military blood in me too; I'm descended from two British Navy Admirals, one of whom apparently played an important role in the fight against Napoleon's forces, and one of whom was heavily involved in the fight against the Americans when they rebelled against us. Also, my Great Great Great Grandfather was the commander of the British forces in Ireland early on in the 18th century. 0 Share this post Link to post
Liam Posted March 29, 2002 I'm descended from a man named Coonard. I win. 0 Share this post Link to post
Rellik Posted March 29, 2002 Why would life have to come from somewhere else when it begins so easily in any old pool of water? My family comes from Russian Gypsies. Dunno if that's good or bad tho. 0 Share this post Link to post

NiGHTMARE Posted March 29, 2002 I think you mean they're not Roman Catholic, the Anglican faith is still Catholic, hence the Archibishops, bishops, etc rather than just Vicars, ministers, etc like the Protestant churches have. BTW, where did you find out that information about the guy? A website or what? The Sancroft name eventually came to halt along one of its lines (due to too many daughters and not enough sons), and it became a tradition in my family to merge Sancroft with the last name, so there's a few Sancroft-Bakers in the family tree. Fortunately more recent ancestors of mine saw how stupid double barelled names are and made it into a middle name instead, so my Grandfather, my Dad, and my brother are all Sancroft Bakers :) 0 Share this post Link to post
