A "complete" Doom CD/flash drive

Recommended Posts

What would you include on a CD/flash drive with Doom stuff on it that contains what you feel are the most important things, without having too much? I've been thinking about it, and I came up with this:

Games
Ultimate Doom
Doom II
Master Levels for Doom II
Final Doom
WADs
Alien Vendetta
Blackgate
ChordG
Classic Episode
Crossing Acheron
Darkening
Darkening 2
Dawn of the Dead
Demonfear
Deus Vult 2
Doom City
Doomsday of UAC
Dwango5
Earth
Equinox
Eternal Doom
Fava Beans
Galaxia
Grove - Alternate
Hell Revealed
Hell Revealed 2
Icarus: Alien Vanguard
Kama Sutra
Memento Mori
Memento Mori 2
Mordeth
Null Space
Nuts
Nuts 2
Nuts 3
Origwad
Phobos
Polygon Base
Requiem
Scythe
Scythe 2
This Suxx
Verada
Void
Vrack2b
Source Ports
Chocolate Doom
PrBoom+
GZDoom
Skulltag
Editing Utilities
DeHackEd
Doom Builder
XWE
Oblige
Patches
SUPRWEP8.DEH

EDIT: I guess Blackgate would be a better choice than The Punisher, seeing as though the latter became a level in Plutonia, albeit a modified version.
EDIT 2: Added Skulltag and Oblige.

That's a good start but I would add the following

Crusades and Slayer by Richard Wiles
2002ADO
Death Tormention by Paul Corfiatus
the ic series by Ian C.
Stranded in Dusk and Back 2 Basics by Espi

there's more of course...

Ultimate DOOM
Chocolate Doom
all the vanilla DOOM maps, megawads and TCs (at most 200 MB)
Chex Quest 1 & 2
DOOM 3: Mr. Smiley Head's Safari (the original DOOM v1.2 hack)
DOOM alpha & beta releases
Yadex
xwadtools
various DOS tools that don't have Unix equivalents (and also DEU 5.21)
various text files, docs, etc. (including Tricks of the DOOM Programming Gurus ebook)

I think all that stuff would fit in 1/2 the space of a 650 MB CDROM. If there was still enough room, I'd add DOOM II and a set of hand-picked PWADs.

Hey, you said "flash drive", so I'll say "all PWADs from the /idgames repository".

You about to get skooled son.

I already did it. I have an 8gb USB flash drive that has pretty much all the Doom content I could want.

Here's mine:

ODAMEX is my preferred source port for single and multiplayer. It has joystick support, it's got a classic Doom feel to it, it plays deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture the flag, and it's also got "on the fly" wad loading capabilities, so it doubles as it's own frontend. I just type the filename of the wad I want to play and Odamex loads it up on the spot without having to exit out of the program.

PRBOOM has prboom_plus, which I use for playing and recording demos. I don't use it for much else.

XPADDER is a program that maps the buttons on my game controller to keystrokes on my keyboard so that I can play with a controller.

BATCH is a folder where I keep batch files to make life easier. Inside the DOOM folder is a bunch of shortcuts (with cute Doom-related icons) to batch files to record demos, or playback demos, or play a certain IWAD, etc. So it's really user-friendly.

ICONS is just a folder with the aforementioned Doom-related icons for my shortcuts. Thats all.

DEMOS is a huge folder loaded with Demo lumps I found in /idgames archive, which includes a bunch of demos people included with their wads, speed runs, and nightmare runs, deathmatches, etc., and some other cool demos of popular megawads.

IDE is for Internet Doom Explorer, which is a utility I use to browse for live Odamex servers online.

WADS has all my wad folders.

IWADS has Shareware Doom, Ultimate Doom, Ultimate Doom: BFG edition, Doom 2, Doom 2: BFG Edition, Plutonia Experiment, and TNT: Evilution.

MODS just has some dehacked patches and sound/music replacements and other random stuff.

PWADS has a complete listing of all the wads from D!ZONE 1, 2, and 3. I've also got The Master Levels for Doom 2, Maximum Doom, Demon Gate, Instant Doom, The 'levels' folders from the /idgames files, and a bunch of random stuff from the 'ports' section, mostly boom-compatible stuff that can work on odamex.

EXTRAS is just a folder where I keep my No Rest For The Living wad, and Oblige level generator, and any other wads that I haven't sorted into other folders yet.

CTF is all the odamex compatible CTF wads I could find.

All of this works and functions perfectly simply by plugging the USB drive into a computer. No installation required. There hasn't been a computer that I tested this on that didn't work. I have a computer in my house with this entire directory in the C:\, plus shortcuts in the startup folder, so I literally turn the computer on, and it loads up Doom, Xpadder, and a dedicated Odamex server without me having to do anything.

I'd suggest ditching XWE and using SLADE 3 instead.

As far as games go, I would also include the other Doom engine games, especially Heretic, Hexen, and Strife. (Hacx and Chex Quest, I can do without.)

Given the size of flash drives nowadays, I'd probably just grab everything from there.

Nemark, if your collecting Master Level related stuff, Tom Mustaine had a Inmost Dens tribute map that was rudely rejected from the project. You can get it off his site :D

You can fit entire /idgames on a 16gb flashdrive if you exclude everything that is not compatible with the doom engine(quake 4 demos and such).

Oh wow, thanks Ragnor :) I thought my collection of "official" (and related) maps was mostly complete. I wonder now if there's anything else I may be missing related to official id projects.

You have all the CChests except cchest 4.

Also, why XWE and not SLADE3 ? :(

Replace Skulltag with Zandronum and you're good to go.

Also, have a copy of V2 (0.97) and V3 (3.57) versions of Oblige and the V2 branch modification called Obhack
