arctan.wad: useless fractal map

As usual: I got bored, opened doombuilder, drew shapes, and proceded to copy/paste the shit out of them. 64k sidedefs and 300 monsters later I arrived at this:

arctan.zip (tested in prb+, cl9)

There's not a whole lot to see, but here's the automap after I'd just finished drawing it (click for bigger pic):




As the fractal approaches its limit the perimeter of the shape is a square rotated by arctan(1/2) radians, hence the name. The gameplay was sort of an afterthought, so only hit the switch if you feel like having a bunch of monsters teleport in :).

I seem incapable of making easy maps nowadays :). Also I imagine recording a FDA for this would be painful, seeing as you'd have to play through all the waves again after each death

Fractal map is an interesting idea. I'd like to try something out along those lines, though in a more architectural sense.
You can see fractal tendencies in large complex maps as it is, due to the limitations of the geometry and texture resources I guess, lots of repeating details and similar rooms, corridors, stairways.

Nice creative map and music (did you make the music?) and the gameplay looks fun from the demo (haven't played it yet). Not sure if you tried this, but after you make a piece of fractal you can join all the smallest squares together, and join all the mediums etc. Then when you copy past, join the first chunk of smalls w/ the pasted chunk etc. So eventually you can just click on all the smalls with a single click to maybe try something like raising each nest's floor higher or whatever. (maybe a better way is just tag all the smalls etc and search for the tag).


EDIT: I tried like 15 times and suck at the end 4x viles and die. Also its obvious you did join the sectors or whatever because the nests have different light shades.

nice demo ggg! And naw I didn't write the music, it's from a japanese PC game called "Nocturnal Illusion". I liked it because it reminded me of a museum or something, which was kinda the vibe I was going for.

@obsidian: in addition to performance, apparently there's also some discrepancies between scrolling floor speeds in prb+ and zd (unless that's been fixed?), I forget which one's faster/slower, but just a warning that the monsters may not enter at the intended rate.
