Episode 2 Attempt - please test!

Recommended Posts

This is my first attempt at an Episode 2 style map. I've done E1 and E4 before, and I'm pretty confident with traditional hell style, so I now try this.

Episode 2 maps seem to be the most difficult to pull off, because the art style is kind of inherently ugly with clashing hell and techbase features, and there tends to be no BFG or big boss monsters for challenge.

I think I gave it some decent difficulty, though I'm not a great player. Map: E2M1, only used vanilla features but I haven't tested the limits.

fda. Overall enjoyed it, just one classic complaint: I had to kill some non-threatening barons with sg/cg, which is boring. Now for some random thoughts:
- While the map is non-linear, there is clearly one best route: obviously you want to go for the rocket launcher first. It would be more interesting if the routes were more or less balanced out.
- I don't really care about the "purity" of texturing but maybe there are too many red bricks for a E2 map. The red key area looks almost like something from E3.
- Speaking of that area, it might be a good idea to add windows behind the pillars. It would make that location feel more open.
- There was some weird switch that didn't change its texture when activated, I found that a bit distracting. I think that's because the upper texture of that linedef is a switch as well, so probably only that part is changing (and you can't see that).

Hmm I thought the dark area would be more threatening. And it seems I didn't make the exit inaccessable without the red key, and the red key door seems easy to forget..I'll do some restructuring and add more difficulty.

There's not many rockets so i didn't think it would matter much having it only on one side, but if I guess if I put another launcher in the dark area it would help the diffuclty too, allowing more barons while still being dangerous because of difficulty seeing spectres.

I'm guessing the jump across to the exit is also intended to be in keeping with the original E2. Anyway, here's a first-exit UV Pacifist.

I wouldn't call this an Episode 2 style level - maybe the wall textures are the same but the fights are more mean-spirited and I'm not seeing any obvious armour at the start =P
