The 'worst games ever' thread

Recommended Posts

To the people that said...

SPORE >> I own it. I've literally never played it though, but that's how I roll.

ALIEN COLONIAL MARINES >> I didn't feel it was as bad as everyone said. I beat it, but the ending is a big fuck you to know that you have to pay an extra $30 to finish the story. It wouldn't have been as bad if I wanted to pay the $30 or if I said OMG I can't wait and I'm gonna play ACM every day until the DLC to finish the story comes out in a year.

GTA 4 >> I own it on PS3 and for PC. I actually owned it for years before I ever got around to playing it. I played it this morning. Its too real. Too boring, I couldn't care less about the characters. Its not the story that I want to be playing. There's no GTA Cheese.

I can still play Vice City and San Andreas to no end and have a blast doing it. Fuck is the game brown and gritty in a negative way. You can sit in a cab and take a ride, but who wants to see all the gorgeous brown? Who wants to play the mini games? They just feel like such a waste of time. On top of that I don't want to maintain relationships with people. Its such a chore. Actually driving is the real chore. There aren't really any cool areas to go dangerously fast before there's a stupid slight turn around a building.

Another thing is the traversal. Him going upstairs, downstairs and even turning. I can understand the need to slowly go up and down stairs or you fall, but turning he can't really turn on a dime? Its like a boat turning. Also the stupidity of some of the climb mechanics. Climbing up and over doors. He can climb on car doors and stand. Damn that's some balance. Oh and speaking of climbing doors he can literally hang from door frames. What? Who can do that? Guess I was wrong about the game being too realistic.

RANT OVER ^^^

Now... here are some games from my childhood. I suppose I wouldn't call them the worst ever, since they're from the Atari age, but I remember spending days and weeks on the following games.

E.T. >> Yeah I owned it. I played the fuck out of it. I was so confused and frustrated as a kid as to what to do. You fall down a pit and pick a flower and need to levitate back up only to get shoved back into the pit again? I didn't figure out until I was 28 that everyone else thought this game was shit too.

SUPERMAN ON ATARI >> What was I doing? Fly around picking up stuff. You can fly anywhere to any screen, left, right up, down through pavement. A defender clone would have been much better. Defender was awesome so was that Chopper rescue game. Choplifter... something like that.

FINAL FANTASY 8 >> Probably the worst RPG I've played... in fact its the one that made me just flat out stop playing Final Fantasy games after that. It was like Harry Potter with Resident Evil's style of walking on painted backgrounds. I've played it twice in my life far enough to where a school gets missiled. The espers or whatever felt too common and all I was doing was watching those long animations... over and over again. Actually you can get upgrades that cut your battles down to 50% less battles and finally 100% less battles. What is an RPG without the battles? That's literally the whole reason I play RPGs, for the chess game aspect of it.

>>> I see on PSN that Amy is just $2 and I hear that's one of the worst games ever. I also hear War Z is one of the worst games ever too. Pay to win coupled with the fact you can go 45 minutes without seeing another player or a zombie.

>>> edit >> just bought Amy so I can report if its one of the worst games ever.

Here's mine worst games which I can now find in my shelf lying now:

Nerf Blast Arena: A kid friendly FPS shelled in Unreal Engine. Except shitty.
Squad Leader: Doesn't look great, goddamn clunky... That's what I remember about it. And then I have Jagged Alliance 2 lying on shelf too. But thirty times better, I say. And I still play it, even today.

And both of those games I received when I was 10 years or so. I have no idea why brother bought them. Did he got them like free or max 2€ apiece?

Regarding DNF and The Hive, am I the only one who remembers that this shit was in Duke Nukem 3D as well? Not as graphic as DNF, but it wasn't any secret what the aliens were doing to these women. I could see the bit at the beginning of the level with the twins to be tasteless for sure, but the rest seems to be pretty serious business.

More on-topic: Another vote for Superman 64, seeing as I've had the displeasure of playing it recently. Made it to the first action stage and no further, considering navigating a level is difficult with a draw distance of about 4 meters.

I actually made that argument in my last reply but opted to just make a snide remark. Duke 3D had all that kind of humor in it, just limited to how it was portrayed technologically. Duke had sex, Duke could kill an assimilated women by choice, throw money at prostitutes, etc. The same over exaggerated "Duke Nukem is making us video games look bad" assertion was present when Duke 3D was released - it's just Duke 3D was enjoyed by us as youths and has implanted it's self in our pop culture, positively.

People have the right to find all this to be tasteless, and frankly, they were doing this to be intentionally tasteless; I don't think the developers made it for humor's sake. I was actually rolling my eyes more at the anus tickling and booby slapping more then the implied rape simply becasue, well, it was there in Duke 3D. In fact, DNF can pretty much be summed up as Duke 3D concentrate with linear level design and bad modern FPS mechanics.

You guys just reminded me of a PC game that was way better than it had any right to be. Excellent graphics and music for a rail shooter.

GTA 4 >> Its too real.

My biggest beef with IV besides the (b)romance simulator aspect was that it's too schizo. You can be watching a cutscene where Niko is talking about how bad shit was back home and how he came to America to escape that... and it could be sandwiched between twenty minutes of you going around in an ice cream truck running people over. GTA is at its best when its not trying to be serious business. Telling a story about a guy trying to make good makes no sense in a game that actively encourages and often enforces you to do the exact opposite. Now GTAV's story makes a bit more sense, from what little I heard; basically Breaking Bad minus the terminal cancer.

This is an aside, and it's too late in the evening here to expand on this too much, but saying Games are supposed to be fun is like saying songs are supposed to be catchy and pictures are supposed to be pretty.

The goal of a game should be "to be worth playing".

A) Shouldn't a picture be pretty or music be good sounding (catchy might not be right term for it as sounding music doen't need to be catchy). I certainly don't want a non pretty picture in my place, and I want top listen to good music, and I don't think a non fun game is worth playing.

Captain Red said:

Maybe I am being self-righteous but it's frustrating when people act this kind of thing isn't worth criticizing because it's a video game.

It's like movies, We all went to watch Hot Tub Time Machine because it was called Hot Tub Time Machine, and to see Craig Robinson say

***SPOILER***
"It must be some kind of hot tub time machine"
***END SPOILER***

We could also look at Monty Pythons Life of Brian which was banned nearly everywhere in the UK cause people thought they were mocking Jesus with the character Brian (Jesus did feature in the film, potrayed respectfully). We should slack of games and movies like them, and maybe look more morally critical at those that look like those that try to be more moral and serious, game or no game.

I'm not defending 8 in any way, but I honestly can't tell if this is serious or not. Particularly the Enc-Half and Enc-None ability thing.

I know, plus there's so many tucking extra little features and things you can pick up and interact with. The physics, lighting and texturing are so fucking mind-blowing, I can't even comprehend it. And the thing is optimized so well, it runs at a constant FPS that never lags.

Even though the textures are high-res and photo-realistic, it's all to render the same mind-numbing day over and over again, ringing with the din of pointless conversations, traffic, and screaming children. The game gives you the option to go out and do certain things, like visit a museum, or visit with family, or go and see the Taj Mahal or something, but that's about it. The game boasts an incredibly vast cast of characters who will say and do anything to prove that life isn't a complete waste of time. These people will criticize you and insult you, and come up with all kinds of new-age philosophy to try to convince you to keep being abused by modern corporate society.

And if you don't like it, you need to see a therapist who will pry into your private life and give you much needed guidance in the right direction, the direction of health and prosperity. The game really does just boil down to some mind-numbing conversations, paying taxes, and doing shit you don't want to do, just because society says so.

I probably shouldn't have posted that, but I did. Have a nice day.

Had the demo of this, seemed fine to me. It was just UT with foam instead of bullets. Couldn't see anything wrong with it, aside from the bots being slightly dopey at times.

I expected to see more genuine steaming turds in this thread, but some people just seem to be listing slightly-below-average games that they took a particular disliking to for some reason. I know it's all subjective, but still, the definition of "worst" is being stretched a bit here.

Dead serious.

I can't say its the worst game. I'm not even sure if its a bad game, but several times I just wondered why am I playing this? Why do I sit through all these esper things? Then I just turned off the battles. But there's a downside to that... bosses will destroy you. The music too is weird. And I keep waiting for it to bust out in a porn since the acting is so bad and the dude is surrounded by a harem of women. Well there is one other guy that appears later who isn't a villain.

>>> about to play Amy now.

I can't call it one of the worst games ever, but I know bad character models and too dark to see when I play it. Good controls, but the character's body gets in the way which is weird when its OTS. The camera swings differently in a bad way. Good controls, attack, dodge, battle stance, run, tap button to run faster and so on. Everything RE was missing. I have to play it more.

I'm pretty sure there's an option to cut summon sequences. Besides that, I'm not sure why you're complaining about deliberately ruining your own gaming experience for using an item that does exactly what it says on the label. That's like saying Doom is easy because you played through the whole thing in God mode.

The first time I played it I opted not to use the skip battles. The second time I did opt to cut battles at some point, but I realized that didn't work when the bosses blocked you. So I was stuck using espers / animals / whatever. I'm not sure you can turn off animations.

Oh yeah then there's the card game. Took me a while to figure out what was going on with the card game.

Anyway... Final Fantasy 8.

Download some mods for it and your experience with the game will drastically improve. Stand alone, I agree, its total shit and boring as hell. If you want a map that allows you to go back to the awesome basics of GTA here you go:

Well I get that it probably didn't interest you, and I have no intention of getting you to like it, I respect your opinion. However, I will refute the Enc-None thing. You can slap that on and go to the world map and find Draw Points for Magic at your leisure (especially since once you get to Lv 100 there is no point to fight unless you need to draw or for rare items). Easiest way to get 100 Ultimas, Full-Cures, etc. It also allows you to get to Odin (The whole event is timed) and fight him without blowing a bunch of time on encounters in the Centra Ruins, so there is a point to it. I enjoyed your comment about the harem though!

Well I think we can all agree that if they'd preserved Duke 3D's fun maniacs and cool secret filled levels instead of the ability to mercy kill alien rape victims it would have probably been a better game.

Doubleedit: Wrote a useless post, erased, and now I've come up with a productive use for it.

I've recently been playing a game called Red Orchestra 2, which is about as far away from Doom as one can get as far as FPS games go. More of a WWII simulation than a game. It's pretty good and I have been having fun, but there's one map that has provided me with the single worst gaming experience I've ever had.

It's called Bridges of Druzhina. In a game where a single well-placed round will kill you, where cover and planning are crucial, I'd like to know who thought it was a good idea to have one side spawn on the high ground with lots of cover and shrubbery, and the other to spawn on a relatively flat open area half a kilometer wide. It's like the shooter went away and was replaced with a game where you play as a target in a shooting range. This goes on for about 20 minutes, give or take 10 minutes.

Playing it means you're relying on the higher-ups on the team to use smoke cover, shelling, tanks etc. wisely, but good luck getting 32 people online to do that, especially when a third of your team is playing for the first time and treating it like a CoD-clone.

I think it was just frustrating because it takes an otherwise decent game and turns it into a crapshoot. It certainly was worse than any "bad" game, since one usually goes into E.T. or whatever expecting it to be complete shit.

Been thinking. Thought of a few. The LIST function makes my post look all important and interesting:-

  • Sonic Generations

What seemed to be the first good Sonic the Hedgehog game since the Mega Drive/Genesis days turned out to be a huge troll. While the 2D-esque updates of the classic levels were great, the other half of the game's content was a celebration of everything that was wrong with more 'recent' Sonic games.

I've never seen such a stark juxtaposition of good and bad in the same game. In order to play the good stuff, you have to play through the conspicuously bad. It's like no one involved in the making of it had even played the old games.

  • Far Cry 2

Far Cry (1) was epochal. And a really good game. But I don't know what happened to the sequel. I think Ubisoft just cashed in on the "Far Cry" name, despite it having nothing in common with Far Cry - thematically, or enjoyment-wise.

Fuck this game. Fuck the malaria mechanic, fuck those eternally-respawning checkpoints, fuck the total lack of point, purpose and atmosphere that the first game had.

  • Tomb Raider (2013)

Said all I can say about it here.

    tl;dr: Terrible reboot, game blows.

  • Mortal Kombat Trilogy

Midway threw a bunch of random shit together, which obviously looked and felt like it came from three separate games. Charged a few dozen $/£ for it, suckering in every pubescent dork of the era. Shame on them.

I haven't played DNF, but I have to say, after watching a few videos, it's kind of like when someone in a movie lets out a really big, obvious fart, and there's no rhyme or reason to it, and in my head I'm thinking, "Really?" Juvenile humor can be very hit-or-miss. "Ren and Stimpy" (before John K. was fired) was a brilliant example of it working extremely well. Watching Duke get ejaculated on by aliens in a DNF video just made wince, not because it was gross, but because someone thought that was funny, when it's just kind of stupid.

Okay, as far as disappointing games goes, I was definitely not impressed with Twisted Metal 4. The third game had some definite problems, so I was hoping the fourth one would be a redeemer. Instead, it had very boxy, boring level design, vehicles that you felt embarrassed to play as (like Garbage Man and Meter Maid), weird mechanics that caused wall sticking and frequent flipping over, a superbly crappy soundtrack that included no-name alt rock and out-of-place hip hop, a "freaky clown" aesthetic that felt outdated even at the time, very little in the way of interactive destructibility, a pointless and very limited "make your own vehicle" option, minimal and boring multiplayer maps, random framerate issues, craptacular ending cinematics and bland art design. Might have been a mediocre stand-alone game, but it was a tremendous failure compared to the first two Twisted Metal games, which were about as much fun as you could have with vehicular combat.

I've recently been playing a game called Red Orchestra 2,

I own Red Orchestra 2, because a Humble Bundle had it. Never played it. The trailer did nothing to make me want to play it. Speaking of Red Orchestra 2...

KILLING FLOOR >> While I can't call it the worst game ever, it looks good, has good enemies, and good guns, it just feels disappointing that its a team based hoard game. It felt so slow. I haven't played it enough to make a memory of it really. I remember the maps and how underwhelmed I was. Yet I do have a lot of Steam friends that play it or used to.

TOMB RAIDER 1 >> This is for the person that said he didn't like Tomb Raider 2013. I've owned quite a few Tomb Raider games and never been able to get into them at all. I've been watching as friends played them and helped solve puzzles and stuff, but I just didn't like them at least on PC. Maybe on PS1 they would have been better with a controller. I know GTA games feel a lot better with a controller though. One of my friends really tried to get me into playing Tomb Raider games he said you like Zelda 64 right? Its just like a Zelda game. And I guess in a way he's right, I just still couldn't get into it. Far from the worst, but I remember it as bad.

MORTAL KOMBAT TRILOGY >> I owned it and leading up to its release I felt OMG gonna be the best game ever! But I felt that UMK was just better. There wasn't really anything new going on in MKT to keep my interest and that even holds true for Armageddon. There was a lot of new characters, but outside of the new Beat Em Up tacked on, it didn't feel fresh anymore. Oooo air combos. Were they needed? Yay now everyone has 2 fighting styles instead of 3. I felt Deception was a lot better and I sank a lot of time into Deception and its extra modes. I really feel that I as a person don't want EVERYTHING. I don't want all characters, I always need lack of something to keep me going. Maybe if they had Tekken 2's version of unlocks where half the game characters are unlocked and I need to unlock the rest I'd say fuck yeah look at me unlocking shit! Man I can't wait to play as Rain! OMG Rain unlocked! Now I'm gonna play as Rain. OMG another hour as Rain. Now I've mastered him time to go unlock someone else! Instead of 1 playthrough as this guy, 1 playthrough as that guy. oh fuck 20+ more I need to play through oh what a chore.

WINTER RACE 3D >> Never played it. Looks like shit. You need to pick your track and play it instead of getting stuck. Personally I would have had it where when you hit an object you respawn in front of an open area a second or so later.

GTA CONTROLS ON PS >> I've always hated these controls. Especially compared to the X-Box controls. Driving and breaking with the triggers feels right and here's why... When GTA SA came out they included a controllable camera you could rotate with the right thumb stick. How does that work when you drive using your right thumb to hit the gas.... and using your OTHER RIGHT THUMB to work the camera? Not sure who has a second right thumb, but it should have been the trigger and not a button.

Mortal Kombat Advance: I was a bit excited to have a portable Mortal Kombat game where I could beat shit up and make them bleed anywhere I wanted to while on the go. Unfortunately it's a tad glitchy and amazingly unbalanced with AI that seems to be stuck on the hardest difficulty. The only way to win seems to be spamming Kano's high kick for every single fight. Easily the worst Mortal Kombat game ever.

Carnivores Cityscape: I really liked the hunting games, but this AvP2 rip off is horrible, with bad levels, bad design, and horrendous fighting and combat mechanics. Most of the time I find myself aiming at the ground as the Dinosaurs are fast enough to get right under me from a mile away within a few seconds. Goddamn it's bad. In fact, I'm even doing a Let's Play on this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W55zvDxxno

League of Legends: Everyone I know is like "FUck yah Leag of LEGENDS. PLAY SUM LOL OHMYGOD TAKE MID GO TOP NUMU SKINS GET DUNKED LOLXD MIDMIDMIDMIDFUCKING TURRETS! I WANT A NEW SKIN!" so naturally I thought it'd be okay to try out. Good fuck this game isn't fun at all. But maybe it's just that I really hate the way it works. They said it was RTS like, but maybe whenever I hear that I'm too busy thinking Age of Empires style gameplay.

I liked the GTA controls of the 3 series on PS. In SA I only used the right stick camera while on foot if any all, and used the shoulder buttons to look left rightand backwards in car, especially since it was needed for drive bys. Hated controls in GTA4 which was trigger on the 360 and in genral (see my rant and others on it)

Dropping the monsters/goofy sci-fi stuff was part of the problem. Had they at least stuck to the theme of the first game, it would have been a tiny bit better.

Gamepads work better for Tomb Raider, yes.

But you don't need a console to play games with a gamepad. Unless you're one of these people who insist on playing every PC game with the mouse and keyboard just because it's on the PC, which is as ridiculous as playing a FPS with a gamepad.

I preferred the whole sneaking past mercenaries over the dealing with monsters bit, especially in the Xbox 360 version before you got the feral powers yourself (played both it and the PC version where you don't get feral powers but still face monsters). Hope 4 takes a story similar to 3 but the gameplay of 1 PC (or Xbox 360 pre getting powers).

MK ADVANCED >> OMG how the hell could I forget about Mortal Kombat Advanced. Wow it was bad, the collision detection was so slow, the button lag too. MK difficulty always seems to be on hard.... until you put a quarter in, then suddenly it becomes easy until you win. Shitty game. I bought that game day one. I thought MK Deadly Alliance Advanced was pretty nice though. They did a good job with 3D tech even if the 3D graphics were pretty crude. MK Tournament offered the other half of the characters. I was less thrilled for that one since it was just the missing characters. I remember MK2 GBC being less frustrating :-)

CONTRA 3 ADVANCED >> I <3 Contra 3. People say its difficult, but its a game you get awesome at. Anyway.... Contra 3 Advanced meant 1 weapon at a time.... Not 2. Ouch. No smart bombs and you will miss them at some points. Even though GBA has 2 UNUSED buttons that they could have offered a switch weapon / bombs. In fact let me go dust that bitch off.... The top down stages were replaced with new side scrolling stages which are welcome, but its just not the same. The second stage seems too narrow and confined so it just isn't all that fun, its more like a death bottleneck to weed out players. It feels more like a great upgrade to Contra 1 but a downgrade to Contra 3.

Damn that Contra Advance (full title is Contra Advance: Alien Wars EX). That's a fucking awful game. But I wouldn't say it's a real disappointment. Konami was quick enough between announcing it and releasing it; I can understand that it would be shit. It's like they said here's Contra, and we'll fuck it up. How did they do so bad, I don't even know. Those 2 replacing stages come from the Sega Genesis version of Contra. But I think I saw a PC version of Contra once, it is much worse.

The worst game for me, according to the OP's description, I'd say Driver 3. Or they call it Driv3r. I can't even describe what's bad I mean there's not a single thing about it that I like or find good. And I've been pretty lenient with Driver 2.

i guess since I spent $5 - $10 on Contra Advance and felt how much love and fun I had playing Contra 3 for a good decade that it wasn't a disappointment so much as I forgot about it until now. The $5 - $10 was more a token of appreciation to the game.... even if that money was to a second hand seller.

So far there have been much worse games out there that no one has stated.... but since I haven't played those worse games I'd feel like I'm just parroting things.
