Fun windows trick

Recommended Posts

Ahem. you know that irritating loading splash picture for windows whenever you reboot? You can change it by doing this:

1. find the file logo.sys
2. open it with MSPAINT or whatever is is that you use.
3. In truth, it's actually a bitmap file.
4. change it to whatever you please.
5. Impress your friends by rebooting in front of them.

Trust me, it makes you seem smarter than you actually are.

Well, I didn't exactly know that, but I had an assumption that it was likely that you could do something like that :-)

Its an answer for anyone who has wanted to know how. It's bugged me forever, until Lut told me how to do it. Thanks Steve.

You know, there are countless desktop themes out there that automatically do this. Hell, one DOOM ][ desktop theme I used to have had both start and shut-down splash screens.

You mean the one by that Czech guy? I think he was Czech anyway... that guy had a cool DOOM demo screensaver jobbie. It was a little buggy but neat too. I tried it out once then switched back to "blank screen" to go with my "(NONE)" background. :)

I don't know who the author was, but it didn't have a screensaver with it. Now THAT is what I'd like for a .scr :)

Cute.

Now for something completely different. And useful!

Ever want to be able to open a dos window into into the current diretory when navigating in My Computer (explorer)?

This works in all versions of Win9X. Dunno about XP.

1. Open an explorer window.
2. Click view, options, filetypes from the menu bar.
3. Click the FOLDER icon then the edit button.
4. Click New.
5. In the action field type: Ms-Dos Prompt
6. In the application used to perform action field type:
c:\windows\command.com /k cd
7. click ok, then ok again, then close.

Now you can right-click any folder or drive, and click on Ms-Dos Prompt in the right mouse button menu. A dos window will open in the current directory.

Windows 95 is not a virus!

Viruses are free.
Viruses can be gotten from any good website.
If detected soon enough, most viruses can be removed from your computer without a huge loss of data and time.
Viruses don't take up HUGE wads of disk space.
Viruses don't need 32MB of ram to run.
Viruses do something.
Viruses come in flavors, not just one-size-fits-all.
Viruses use the "cutting edge" programming skills to make themselves less noticable. (untill they are ready to be noticed)
Viruses don't have major bugs. (if they do, then they don't work, so they're not virus')
Viruses don't have three different sets of documentation that is all mixed up and wrong.
Viruses arn't on every computer.
Viruses don't have stupid wizards.
Viruses don't say that they are user "friendly", when they aren't.
Viruses install themselves.
Viruses don't try to push out all compitition. They just try to do their job.
Viruses don't try to copy what Apple does.
There are programs you can buy, or get free to remove viruses.

On XP the console would be gotten with C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe... and I can recommend against trying it.

Just fair warning.

I tried doing that with LAME. Apparantly... anything you add to either folder or file folder on XP automatically becomes the default action, and since these are system filetypes you can't just 'remove' an action, you have to regedit it out. Cute.
