How is the Rage builder / level designer

Recommended Posts

Isn't that what Doom 4 makers will be using? For those who have tried it, how easy is it to use? How good of a level can you make? What are the most interesting levels out there? Just something to spark up a conversation. Maybe this should go into the Doom 4 subforum?

It's basically a more developed version of Radiant featuring the Idstudio stuff with megatexture stamping and so on. Most of the map creation is done in Modo or equivalent 3d suites though it's as easy as loading Quake1-Doom 3 map geometry into it as it is the same basic map format (even if the final compiled format has changed greatly between Quake1,2,3 and Doom3).

If you're interestedin making maps for Rage or Doom4 you really do need a monster of a computer to even have a chance. The megatexture editor is extremely demanding.

What have been the pros and cons of mega textures? It seems like the glaring con is you need PC power to load them.

Ok, then yes. that is the issue one is faced with. You need a lot of ram and you need a lot of horsepower for the stamping to be able to work comfortably.

For somewhere between $1500 and $2000 you could probably get the workstation you'd need from Dell's refurbishing program ;) Talking +16 GB RAM, bleeding edge processors, and a huge video card.
