The best and worst of the Plutonia trilogy

Recommended Posts

So between the original, PL2, and PRCP, which has the most love and which the least. Our are they all equally good/bad?

Each one has differences, so it seems like a good comparison. Personally, I'd have to put the original first, no doubt influenced somewhat by nostalgia and for 'inventing the wheel' and PRCP would probably come last cause PL2 is more of a modern day take/epic in comparison and PRCP closer to a homage, but in the end all three I view as a great.

I actually prefer PRCP to PL2, but the orig beats both. Too many monsters in the "sequels" and maps are generally too large to get the Plutonia feel IMO.

In terms of preserving the original feel, PL2 clearly deviates the most. It's more like a modern successor. The map size point is valid. Plutonia had some bigger maps, mainly in its last third (22, 23, 26, 28, 29 for sure), but PRCP and especially PL2 definitely take the average size up quite a bit.

That being said I wouldn't say either PL2 or PRCP has maps too big for a megawad in general. Just they are quite a noticeable bit bigger compared to the original.

Is this a BDL thread?

Was that a rhetorical question? :P

IMO Plutonia > PRCP/PL2

Plutonia - PRCP/PL2 (I can't choose the best from these 2 megawads).

Original Plutonia wins it for me. Of the two PWADs (PL2 and PRCP), I've only played PL2, so I wouldn't be able to say which one out of those two is better.

pl2/prcp > pl

as a, uhmmm, performance player i enjoy the added difficulty and action. the two sequels both do things a little differently and i can't decide, heh.

Agreed. For me PRCP loses on the fact that it's last few maps are nowhere as great as PL2 which has some absolutely amazing maps in its end. The original is great but I prefer PRCP because it's got more action and in my opinion better design. All three are great though.

I don’t know but I loved the map with archies and the strange gravity zone.

Arch-Violence, PL2 MAP11.

Great soundtrack, too.

Having played only the original and PL2, I prefer the original, PL2 was really good, but the original just feels better for me.

I thought this thread was going to be about individual maps. Ranking the full wads though? There's literally only six possible permutations so what is there to discuss? :(

Definitely feel free to go ahead and talk about best/worst maps in any Plutonia wad if you'd like. No such discussion limitations whatsoever. :)

Me, I think my two favorite maps in the original are 29 and 32. Not sure about the rest at the moment.

I left out PRCP because I can't remember much about its individual maps off the top of my head

orig. Plutonia definitely got some great levels that i tend to forget at times. levels like Slayer, The Death Domain, The Sewers, Odyssey of Noises instils some great, nostalgic moods for me. Plutonia 2 definitely kills it with its great soundtrack, though, which enhances the overall atmosphere of the mod quite well. as a whole, though, the original Plutonia flows the best. i haven't played PCRP.

The brilliant part here is that those rankings are pretty much what I would do at least for the maps I remembered. PL2-28 is the best map I've ever played and both MAP11 and 29 are also amazing. The only things I'd disagree with are that PL2-22 should be a bit higher and PL2-31 likewise. But spot on rankings the lower ranked maps of Plutonia were pretty boring treks compared to some of the excellence in Plutonia 2. For PRCP MAP15 would rank pretty high for it's sheer beauty and arduous gameplay.

Good lord i need to finish Plutonia Experiment. I'm such a wuss.

I felt the same way for years. Every time I tried, I'd get to Hunted and get stuck then say fuck it. One day I got past that and found myself beating the whole thing, secret levels and all.

I still only remember PL maps 1 to 11 + 30, 31, 32 for this reason, everything else is a blur. Maybe one day I'll memorise the maps like I have for every other Doom.
