MAP21 UV Fast in 1:56.60 (No previous record)

Demo: z321f156.zip

Holy DAMN that was intense. So many things going wrong. So many deaths. So much frustration. I was on the verge of giving and stopping the stream 3 times! Thankfully I kept on going and managed to beat the sub 2-minute barrier, as well as the existing UV Max record of 2m05. The chaingunner and pinky room was incredibly fast because of one of the chaingunners staying alive at the end of the room shooting for a long time at all the pinkies. The ending was also absolutely clutch especially after running out of rockets AND shells and relying on the last few bullets from the chaingun to kill the final Baron. So much luck and bad luck at the same time... I think this was the most beautiful "plan B" ever.

MAP22 UV Fast in 1:45.31 (No previous record)

For a long time this sub 2 minute run also seemed impossible, like in many other levels. Thankfully the Twitch chat believed in me even when I doubted myself, and surely enough I managed the sub 2, which is also a sub 1m54 - beating the UV Max time but with fast monsters. The most crucial change in routing in this run was deciding to jump down and kill the mancubus from safety after grabbing the secret supercharge. Without dropping down, more than half of the attempts would end to the mancubus vertically blocking that spot and preventing the player from progressing. That can happen either when jumping from the secret, or when jumping from the area behind the yellow key. In theory, not falling down can be faster, but it's much more reliant on the random movement of monsters. In this run I was lucky enough to also get a good time even though I went for the slower strategy. Also made great use of splash damage with rockets at the last group of Barons due to their movement - so quite a lot of luck was still a big part of this run.

MAP23 UV Fast in 1:57.86 (No previous record)

Another 2 minute barrier broken, and another UV Max time beaten in UV Fast. Although I'm happy with this run, this map took me a long time to master. There are many deadly points spread across each section of the map from the beginning until the very end. Not only did many runs end in death, many others ended in failed jumps, missed enemies, not enough in-fighting, and not enough ammunition. So far, this was the Zone 300 run that I spent the most time practicing. I don't think it beats map 20 in terms of things that can go wrong, but it sure is close!

MAP24 UV Fast in 1:56.37 (No previous record)

The practice session for this map went quite smoothly with a lot of successful runs, so I thought this was going to be easier than Map 23. I was wrong. It ended up being very similar to the previous map especially because the start is very deadly, and the ending can be quite deadly too. The worst part is that, to get a good time, you absolutely need be lucky enough with all the in-fighting. In this run I chose to kill all the monsters in the first part of the level (before the blue door). This is the slower strat, which is safer because you don't run the risk of reaching the exit with monsters still alive at the beginning. But if you're lucky with monster movement, the enemies from the start can follow you into the 2nd area and help killing the Mancubi a lot faster, making you save some precious seconds. Also some movement and ammunition mistakes in this run made me lose significant time. I believe sub 1m50 should be possible.

Props to @Professor Soundman for beating the 3min mark on this map! That's the goal that I couldn't to beat here with fast monsters.

Anyway, this is another map with a deadly brutal start, and many other deadly spots in the middle. The red door room is probably thee most difficult mid-way point where in-fighting RNG will dictate if you either clear the room fast and get a good time, or you run out of ammo and have to restart. Also the large amount of 20% damaging floor sections makes this map quite frustrating to speedrun, because health is already limited to begin with, and then you have to deal with the occasional leaky radiation suit... not cool!

Getting a good time here is 99% dependent on in-fighting RNG. I knew that the sub 1m40 was possible but I wasn't sure I had enough time to grind for it. This was a lucky-enough run with the Cyberdemon in-fighting the entire time I was hitting it and also some good in-fighting with the Mastermind. I also got the feeling that even sub 1m30 is possible with godly RNG and in-fighting. I'll leave that challenge to someone else, though.

03, 05, 07, 09-12, 14, 17, 19, 30 & 32 are the remaining maps. As far as I'm aware only 07 and 30 are impossible non-TAS, the rest are doable, just difficult

My last speedrun of the year; a good 7 seconds below the 2m40 objective, and a pretty solid run, which proves that sub 2m30 is also possible. The run went quite smoothly despite the chaotic practice session full of mistakes. The diagonal walls and all the elastic collision were probably my most hated feature on this map; they are so deadly when trying to dodge fast projectiles and avoid arch-vile attacks...

MAP28 UV Fast in 1:57.57 (No previous record)

Yay! Another sub 2m run achieved. These late maps from Zone 300 are just getting deadlier and deadlier. Even though nothing compares to the frustration of grinding "Zone 300's Chasm" aka map 20; this still took a long practice session and a long attempt session to achieve. In theory a sub 1m50 should be possible, but as usual it depends a lot on monster RNG and in-fighting. The worst is definitely the Pain Elemental past the red key. It's positioned in the back of a group of monsters so that it's difficult to reach and shoot down when you first enter the room. And if you decide to kill it later, it will have probably spawned an army of lost souls which will most likely kill your run.

MAP29 UV Fast in 1:48.31 (No previous record)

"Sub 2 might not be possible" - I though, and then THIS HAPPENS?! I'M ECSTATIC about this run! I doubted that sub 2 was within my reach, let alone sub 1m50! But after suffering for over 9 hours at the hands of the Den of Torture, after experimenting, changing, and improving strategies, the grind finally paid off! I was breathless when I finally got the time I did here; not only did all the strategies work correctly, but I also got an ungodly amount of good luck with the in-fighting. When I went back down the lift only one Pain Elemental and one Cyberdemon were left, and the Cyber was very low on health from killing all the Cacos!

I really have to stop saying things like "24 seconds might be impossible"! This was a TECHNICAL but FUN map to grind, because the route doesn't depend on the strategy: UV Fast, UV Max, UV Speed, NM Speed are all the same - you just need to move fast and kill the icon of sin with as few rockets as possible. Since you can safely kill the only arch-vile and collect the only secret while the icon of sin is doing it's death animation, any% and 100% categories will have the same time here; although runs on nightmare / fast monsters are slightly more difficult due to the increased projectile speeds increasing the chances of getting hit and falling over.

Rizera's demo was technically innovative. Skipping the 2 far away buttons and jumping directly to the 3rd platform is a huge time save (discovered by 4shockblast). Also, by shooting at an angle and making the most of the rockets' square blast damage distribution, Rizera managed to increase the damage per rocket and destroy the icon of sin in 7 rockets only. However, after doing some testing, I realized that, with an extremely precise position and angle, it was possible to kill the icon of sin in 6 rockets. It took a few attempts, but I managed to get the setup right and nail the 6-rocket-kill. That, together with a quick-start trick and some SR50 movement before hitting the first button, and I saved enough frames to land a 24s run. Super happy with this result! Also, attempt 69? Nice!

23 seconds is impossible. There, I said it. Your move 4shockblast :)

Is it meaningful to kill the arch before the IoS?

It doesn't really matter when you kill the archie IMO. Doing it beforehand seemed easy enough for me since there's plenty of time to make the jump and do the setup. Also, that means I get invul for the rest of the map and can take Reality as well.

Welp, since my strat seems to be out in the open might as well post this!

MAP30 TAS NM Speed in 0:18.83

Demo: z330x018.zip

This is the strategy I came up with after my 24s run and got beat by 4shockblast's impressive 23s run. After studying his run I realized I couldn't save another second with the strategy that waited for the lift, which was the longest part. So I looked for other angles to try and beat the map and realized the stairs on the left side give you about the same height as the platforms. Finding an angle where the rockets could "thread the needle" of the Icon of Sin's opening was not easy, I ended up using a margin of 4 pixels in between the boxes of rockets on the left side of the screen for setup. Then, within that tiny range, the left-most position brings the rockets closer to the Romero head on the diagonal wall they're hitting (although projectile-movement clipping also plays a role here). At first I found that the left-most position allowed me to kill the Icon of Sin in as few as 13 rockets. So I used Nightmare difficulty for the double ammo, so the rockets at the starting room are enough. I quickly found that sub 20 was possible with a 13-rocket kill, but sub-19 was not, not even with perfect movement. So I played around with more angles and found this extremely precise angle for a 12-rocket-kill that brought this run down to 18 seconds. I don't **feel** that 18 is possible non-TAS - at least not for *my* skill level - because the position to get a 12-rocket kill doesn't just require good left positioning - you also need to glide forward and backwards with mouse movement so that the rocket-movement-clipping at 35fps makes them clip through the left corner of the Icon of Sin's opening. So, if you stand against the back wall on this angle, the rockets hit the left wall of the IOS, if you move a tiny bit forward to a precise spot, they clip through the left wall and hit the IOS.
