U.S. drops bombs on Canadians training.

One reason could be that, at this point in history, there is a historically low ratio of enlisted men to commisioned/noncommisioned officers. Anybody who sticks around for a four-year term will usually spend the last year or two as a buck sergeant or a specialist. There are also more warrant officers and specialists, those people who get the respect and pay of officers and noncoms but can't lead men.

So thats why all the casualties are officers?

Exactly. Plus nearly all of the infantrymen doing the actual fighting in Afghanistan are of the 101st Airborne Division, which (despite what any of you assholes have to say to the contrary) is an elite ground unit. These men and women are all experienced career fighters with rank and decoration to match. That explains why most of the combat deaths have been officers. The accidental deaths (vehicle crashes, whatnot) are mostly officers because vehicles are always staffed/piloted only with officers and noncoms (the enlisted men are support and service crew).

One of the things with the modern military is, once you get out of boot camp, there is almost no fighting involved. The US military has positions for damn near any job available in the civilian market, and very few of them involve dealing with unfriendly natives. You want to fix and service aricraft? Do electrical work? Cook food? Record data? Control traffic? Keep track of resources and material? DJ a radio station? All of these are jobs that the average aircraft carrier needs done. All the fighting is done by experienced career regulars and reservists who choose to do it.

Probably the reason they shipped in 1500 elite troops from England to do the real fighting.

That's always an option. Why endanger our own men when we can get some poor dumb furn'er to catch bullets for us? ;)

That "trick" wont make the USA particularly popular - just wait until the US no longer has super state status, then a lot of other countries will look down on you and scorn you ;-)

America's war policy has been, since vietnam and reinforced in Somalia, to avoid casualties, to the cost of almost anything, it's hard to conceive what America would not do to avoid this

Get with the times, man, the world already looks down on and scorns the States. Shit, read this board on an average day for proof of that. Even its own citizens look down on and scorn the States.

'Course, once China or whatever other nation gains "superior state" status, everyone will be looking down on them before too long.

Pretty quick teh European Union will have more clout than the US, then it'll be interesting to see how things go.

Unless the EU establishes a European government and a military, it can't have much international power at all. Sure, it's an economic entity, but economics doesn't mean much if you don't have a government entity to keep it real and fair. I'm still trying to figure out where the capital backing the Euro is coming from...

Not like that, we all scorn each other - I was thinking more about directly taking advantage of their lower position (Like the US seemingly takes advantage of their allies' lower positions today).

Oh yeah, and to me it seems that the Americans scorn us Europeans as much as we scorn them, so we're even.
I usually try to take these claims that "American soldiers are amateurs" with a grain of salt - especially because we don't have actual inside knowledge on how they're being trained, and besides, the whole US army can't account for what one moron does (as is already mentioned) - it's not like all the officers in the US army train their men the same way, some are bound to be more harsh on their men than others, some of them put different values into their men than others.
Officers are just like teachers - some are good at their job and some of them suck.

I must admit America does have a penchant for shooting itself in the foot, take 911, Britain was one of the 1st countries to offer help, signed up to sending whatever America needed to fight the war on terror, there has been no limit to the help Tony Blair was willing to give, even to the detriment of losing support from some in his Government. What does America do 6 months later? Puts huge tariffs on British steel entering America, threatening the jobs of hundreds of British steel workers :(

Yeah, but you aren't surprised are you Fodders? ;-) This is the American government we're talking about. Geez, teh US is all pissed at Canada because we won't let them biuld an oil pipeline through our country so they can use Alaskan oil instead of ours. They want us to divert our rivers so that the US can have more water. Man, with the US it never ends.

Because, Canadians are so much cooler than Americans. It sucks to be an American. Everyone automaticaly thinks you are an asshole if they find out you are American. Even worse, a lot of them try to kill you. My life would have been a lot more meaningful were I born in Canada...or better yet, Germany.

To the theme of "I'm proud to be an American":
It sucks to be an American...
I wish I where Canadian...

Hope this cheers some of you people up, heh. :)

What really chokes me is that I'm in the US fairly frequently and the American people are fine. It's just their government and all the old school that is completely out of control.

That's funny. Recently, you complained that Americans have no respect and now you defend them?
Kinda reminds me of Fodders first claiming that cops are retards and then a few weeks later, he defends them.
Yeah, I love these forums :-)

The thread you keep going on about
You really have got hold of the wrong end of the stick again, I checked the whole post you keep going on about me calling cops retarded, and in that it's you thats says it, not me

dsm said:

Ok, cops in YOUR part of the world might be retarded, but that doesn't mean that EVERY cop, in the US or anywhere else, is retarded, ok?
Blah, let's shut down this discussion before I post something more stupid than I've already done.

All I did was make a standard joke about prostitutes babies and a song doing the rounds when I was 13 years old . I THEN mention the fact that I was in the police force for 8 years so your comments were retarded, not that police are retarded: jeez! get a grip

Heh, it confuses me too. Most of the Americans I meet are, in all honesty, exactly like us Canadians. But every time I turn on the TV it seems their taking another shot at us.

Well, from my experience on these boards, I would say that you Canadians are no different than the Americans in that respect ;-)

It's the truth, just look at the thread "Don't Americans have any respect?"
Personally, I don't think the Americans are any different from any of us - we all take a shot at some other nation (typically the USA).
I mean, aren't we all human? (Well ok, Ling and his Super Mods are Gods, we all know that ;-))
