Doom Builder 2 - Best general engine to use?

Was curious as to what the go-to engine is for the best compatibility. I'm currently getting back into the mapping scene and am using Doom 2's engine, but was wondering if something like Boom would be better.

The lowest common denominator for cross-port compatibility is the "vanilla" Doom II engine, or Chocolate Doom which makes sure to have all the same bugs and limits as the original engine.

Anything else is a trade-off between additional features and smaller potential userbase. Boom is a good compromise, since most ports (except Chocolate Doom, of course) are Boom-compatible nowadays.
