Can self-referencing sectors cause visplane overflow?

Basically what it says on the tin: considering they can't really be seen by the player, do self-referencing sectors still cause a visplane overflow in vanilla Doom? The DB2 Visplane Explorer shows up a couple of red patches, but I just want to be sure.

They still create visplanes, yes. I'm not sure if there are visplanes made for the actual invisible floors/ceilings, but they do cause the adjacent visplanes to be split. You can see this if you use the visplane viewer mode in Chocorenderlimits.
