CA Senator Leland Yee, bribery and illegal arms charges

Recommended Posts

This ongoing story broke almost 3 weeks ago, so I feel a bit late posting about it now, but since nobody else has, I figured 'what the hell'.

To fill you in, Leland Yee is a California (my state, btw) Democratic Senator who has been a) an advocate of gun control, and b) an advocate of censoring violent video games. Both of which are relevant here:

SAN FRANCISCO -- A California state senator who advocated gun control legislation asked for campaign donations in exchange for introducing an undercover FBI agent to an arms trafficker and told him how to get shoulder-fired automatic weapons and missiles from a Muslim separatist group in the Philippines, according to court documents unsealed Wednesday.

Expanding further on point 'b', here is an article from January of 2013, where Yee is quoted saying:

"Gamers have got to just quiet down," Yee, D-San Francisco, said in an interview Tuesday. "Gamers have no credibility in this argument. This is all about their lust for violence and the industry's lust for money. This is a billion-dollar industry. This is about their self-interest."

Oh, he also apparently (not too long ago) said something about how money corrupts politics, and absolute power corrupts absolutely, or some such sage wisdom.

Yeah the Dems will be a lot better off without his rampant hypocrisy. I think this guy got lampooned on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart a few weeks ago.

It's kind of surreal that there are still politicians that still use video games as scapegoats. There was a study in the UK over a ten year span that showed that violent games didn't really affect kids who were already sane to begin with, and there was a recent study that claims that it's frustrating failure in gameplay that causes aggression, not the violent content.

They essentially had people running two different mods of Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, one with absurd levels of gore, the other with all gore removed but with a game of tag. The ones who played the frustrating melee only tag game were the ones who felt most aggressive, whereas the players of the easy but gory version were laid back.

Still, it's good that it's not really been taken seriously by the general public since the '90s (and mid '00s at the latest), and that almost every politician pushing the non-issue have been discredited in one form or another. Jack Thomson disbarred, and now Leland Yee caught with missile launchers.
