Condense the IWADs into an episode

Recommended Posts

It's been a while since I posted a stupid, just for fun thread. The object here is to make an episode using your favourite IWAD levels. It should have 9 levels including a start map, secret map, map that contains a hidden exit to lead to the secret map and a boss level to finish on. It should escalate in difficulty and possible theme also. Here's mine to start with:

M1: System Control (TNT)
M2: Phobos Lab (Doom)
M3: Circle of Death (Doom 2)
M4: Well of Souls (Plutonia)
M5: Dead Zone (TNT) - secret exit
M6: Abandoned Mines (Doom 2)
M7: Bloodfalls (Doom 2)
M8: Hunted (Plutonia)
M9: Tricks and Traps (Doom 2) - secret level

R1M1: Underhalls (Doom)
R1M2: Inmost Dens (Doom)
R1M3: Refuelling Base (Doom)
R1M4: Bloodsea Keep (PC Doom)
R1M5: The Courtyard (Doom)
R1M6: The Marshes (Doom)
R1M7: Vesperas (Final Doom)
R1M8: Twilight Descends (Doom)
R1M9: Minos (Final Doom)

I only really know these maps from PSX Doom, hence there are a couple of exclusive console only maps.

Underhalls is one of the most exciting slaughters in the original game and I was so new to doom that when I was surrounded by zombie corpses and could still hear distant zombies breathing, I actually thought the dead zombies were going to get back up and attack (never fought against zombies that are so easy to kill!) and I was walking backwards, keeping my gun moving from one corpse to the next.

Inmost Dens is brilliant to explore on co-op. Refuelling Base is epic for co-op carnage. Bloodsea Keep blew me away in the PSX Lost Levels TC; that map was converted superbly well. The Courtyard is a vicious and exciting map that could still kill me even when I was an expert, especially the plasma room.

The Marshes is quite simply terrifying with the lights off. Vesperas is the most beautiful of the PSX maps, achingly forlorn and accompanied by the melancholy Toxin Refinery track. Twilight Descends is IMO the best of all Doom's city maps and it scares me shitless.

Minos is quite simply an outstanding effort. I was rarely so entranced while at the same time terrified by a single map.

Does the episode really need to contain at least one level of Plutonia?

If so, I think I'd skip this thread. Although I have it, I'm not much familiar with Final Doom as a whole, and specially Plutonia has always been discouraging me from a proper playthrough of any of its maps.

According to purist's criteria, you can use whatever maps you want, as long as they come from an IWAD. You could take 9 maps from doom.wad if you want. Also you could change or break the rules because it doesn't really matter.

On that note:
1: Winnowing Hall (Hexen MAP01)
2: Ruined Village (Hexen Deathkings MAP41)
3: The Citadel (Heretic E1M5) [secret exit]
4: Ambulatory (Heretic E4M3)
5: Darkmere (Hexen MAP08)
6: Brackenwood (Hexen Deathkings MAP46)
7: The Chasm (Heretic E3M7)
8: D'Sparil's Keep (Heretic E3M8)
9: Quay (Heretic E5M3)

Nope, do what you want. I shared the IWADs a little in my list cos I'm just like that. If I'm more honest with myself I'd dump Dead Zone for Perfect Hatred but TNT would have looked a little under represented if I did.

Some interesting choices here. I knew Tarnsman's would be Plutonia biased.

Ooh I think it'd be fun to just reduce episodes 1/2/3 to just one episode, with the sameish story:

M1 E1M1 Hangar
M2 E1M2 Nuclear Plant
M3 E1M4 Command Control
M4 E2M2 Containment Area
M5 E2M5 Command Center (secret exit to M9)
M6 E3M2 Slough of Despair
M7 E3M6 Mt. Erebus
M8 E3M9 Warrens
M9 E1M9 Military Base

So I'll approach it simply. With a representative map of each IWAD or (D1) episode, anyway. Picked to be short. The 2 maps I picked from Plutonia are pretty much the only Plutonia maps I'm familiar with.

M1: Entryway (D2 MAP01) (classic)
M2: Refinery (D1 E2M3)
M3: Unruly Evil (D1 E4M4)
M4: Computer Station (D1 E1M7)
M5: Congo (PL MAP01)
M6: Mount Erebus (D1 E3M6)
M7: Redemption (TNT MAP10)
M8: Living End (D2 MAP29)
M9: Go 2 It (PL MAP32) (classic in yet another way)

I think Gez's post makes anything I would've contributed to this thread completely redundant. :D
