Tom Hall Interview

Recommended Posts

Just some Doom related crap I got from a Tom Hall interview...I missed a lot of it, and I heard there was some talk of Doom 3 and stuff...you can read the full interview at apogeecentral.tk when it is done...

[20:55] <Tom_Hall> For DOOM, I made a story about a military conspiracy.... it was really cool...
[20:55] <Tom_Hall> But not at all intrusive to the game.
[20:55] <Tom_Hall> I just wanted a point to what you were doing...
[20:55] <SpaceCow> so who pushed for the demonic stuff?
[20:55] <Tom_Hall> And perhaps some tension for upcoming stuff.... like.
[20:56] <Tom_Hall> An analogy I make is: Aliens would have been a great movie if aliens just jumped out and scared you.

[20:59] <Tom_Hall> The Chainsaw is a reference to Evil Dead II... so is punching demons.
[20:59] <Tom_Hall> The actual chainsaw was my girlfriend's.

[21:00] <Tom_Hall> I designed seven levels, put in the teleporters (I cannibalized Adrian's art to make the teleporter squares).

[21:01] <Tom_Hall> I also came up with the term WAD

[21:01] <Vetek> Question #15: Out of all of the famous companies you have worked on for so long, which do you feel you had the most fun in?
[21:02] <Tom_Hall> The start of id was GREAT, because we were all experts at what we were doing... and I got to be totally creative...

[21:11] <Tom_Hall> Basically, Carmack is a technological genius, and you can't have a strong tech lead and a strong creative lead. You have to have a focus.

[21:12] <Tom_Hall> And though I'm really creative, Carmack's talented, one could say, is more unique in the world, so that was obviously the direction to go. :)

[21:21] <Vetek> Question #23: What are your thoughts on the direction ID software is headed now with Doom 3? Do you feel ID is milking the Doom franchise? Do you think that Doom 3 will be a hit, or will it be a terrible game with a great engine and pretty graphics? <--MY QUESTION WAS ASKED!
[21:22] <Tom_Hall> I think DOOM 3 looks AWESOME!
[21:22] <Tom_Hall> I just hope it is SCARY/DARK/FAST.
[21:22] <Tom_Hall> So far, I believe the first two. :)

[21:26] <Vetek> Question #24: <Quasar`> a good question would be whether he thinks start-up game companies can be successful and eventually achieve creative independence like the kind id enjoys <--QUASAR GOT HIS QUESTION ASKED TOO!
[21:27] <Tom_Hall> Yes, startups can always happen.
[21:27] <Tom_Hall> ANyone can have a great idea.
[21:28] <Tom_Hall> All you need is a programmer, an artist, and a dream.

Well, there ya go...Tom Hall speaks about Doom stuff!

I would like to point out that the interview itself was absolutely horrible, the interviewers gay and totally retarded and most of the questions just very dumb. The bidg-Lut interview doesn't even come close :)

Yeah, they did suck horribly...they wasted Tom Hall's time! He could have done something constructive with his time like watch porn...

Do you feel ID is milking the Doom franchise?

As someone (wasn't it BBG?) pointed out in the Doom 3 forum (I think), id aren't milkin' the franchise, they're ADDING to it.

About general negative comments/reactions to id doing Doom 3: I'm getting really tired of those morons who say that "id are cowards for going with the Doom franchise".
I couldn't be happier that id finally decided to give us a sequel - a REAL sequel to the other two games. I've been waiting for the news of id doing an actual sequel to Doom 2 ever since 1994.

Saying that "id are cowards" for doing this is BULL...shit. They're taking a damn great risk at trying to bring back Doom - what if it turns out to be a major disappointment which makes people wish they never made the sequel?
I'm not saying that id are foolish to do it, I'm just pointing out that id are anything but "cowards".

I think that Doom 3 should be the last official Doom game (three is a good number), but I hope they release mission packs for it (and I'm drooling at the thought of the mods coming out afterwards!).
Now, if id decided to do a fourth and fifth Doom game THEN I might say that id are taking the Doom name too far, but they still wouldn't be "milking" the franchise, only taking it too far and they haven't taken the franchise too far yet (If the three Quakes were true sequels of each other, I'd think that id were taking the Quake franchise too far with Quake IV, but such is not the case).

Yeah, just the single fact that Doom uses a 100% new engine and an completely different gameplay doesn't quite qualify as "milking".

Yep! That was me.

What I meant was the name "Doom". Like ID was like "let's make a new game, but since I can't think of a new name and plot, let's just make a new Doom or something since we just did Wolfenstein!"

It was funny months ago that whenever anyone mentioned "Doom3" all the frads were putting them down..."You gay fuck its not Doom3, don't call it Doom3 stupid" "You have no idea what it will be called yet, stupid" etc
And what do id call it? Doom3, score 1-0 for normal people :)

Oh like if the name meant anything at all.

What I meant was the name "Doom". Like ID was like "let's make a new game, but since I can't think of a new name and plot, let's just make a new Doom or something since we just did Wolfenstein!"

Uuh they were working on a RPG with GM intervention, but realized it wasn't a great way to use this engine. With all the shadows and spooky stuff they needed something scary. Oh look at that, Doom is a scary game. What a coincidence!

Well, that's alright because the original doom was supposed to be seeped in RPG elements ("Hand of Lothar" etc.) until Tom Hall got the boot.

Yey for common sense also.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's the id game Nerve are working on now.
Quest it was called before they canned it in favour of Doom 3.

Paul Jaquays should join Nerve, since he was excited about the 'Quest' project - even if this new all-around mp game developed by Nerve turns out not to be Quest then it'd still be interesting for him I think.

There already is a Chex Quest 3...

Really? I knew there was a 2, but...

Anyway, my point is that they should make another Chex Quest game on the Doom 3 engine. :p

Actually, the Hand of Lothar and other such "RPG" items were just fancy names for keys, according to the Doomworld interview with John Carmack, where it states, and I'll quote

Doomworld: Was Doom originally supposed to be more RPG-ish? Early betas and screenshots, which show the inside of the marine's helmet with weapon readouts and automaps, as well as inventory lists ("Heart of Lothar," "Captain's hand," etc) seem to point to this.

Carmack: In the end, most of those elements are just euphemistic terms for keys.
