OHRRPGCE (And Doom RPG stuff.)

Recommended Posts

(For those looking at this post, just letting people know this isn't a bot-post or anything. Just providing a little information about the tool / engine I've been using to work on the Doom Tactics (RPG) game with Marnetmar / GeneralRainbowBacon / Maes / Etc. Thought it'd be neat to show off to the community here.)

During the past few days, I’ve looked back on a bit of my older work and friends from back when I’d first started up in my artistic and game-development endeavors.

I found that the communities that I’d once joined were alive and.. somewhat-well, but the community I’d come to love has been dispersing and going on with their own stuff as of late.

I’m referring to a community based around the first engine I’d used (And still continue to use) to make a little RPG project I’ve been working on for a while called the OHRRPGCE (Official Hamster Republic RPG Creation Engine).

This community and engine has been CONSTANTLY updated since the late 90s, and continues to thrive to this day, but I see that most people I talk to don’t know the first thing about this, and rather the better-known RPG Maker titles.

However, this community was more than just one based around the engine itself- it is one that has spawned all sorts of community names for itself, several games that would perhaps contend with several games that’re made today, examples being (Links will be provided below) Motrya, Spellshard: The Black Crown of Horgoth, Vikings of Midgard, Sword of Jade, among others.

These are all completely free, and there’s TONS more you can check out at the community sites affiliated with the engine. If you stick around, you’d find the people within it are about SO much more, though.

And the best thing is, not only do you have near 24/7 contact with the engine’s developers through the community sites, but game-making support is also provided as well : >

I STRONGLY encourage any starting-out game developers to at least take a peek at this, as it’s probably one of the best resources in existence, and it’s a shame that so little attention’s been gathered for it!

Double-posting, but only for if people just skim over this and think it's just forum-spam or bot stuff or anything like that.

(Also wondering where Marnetmar is, heh.)

Well, this engine right here is the thing I've been using to make a Doom-centric RPG I've been making up for the past few years now (in fact, there's a thread on it in the Doom General forum.)

Unfortunately, I've been seeing that there's decreasing attention for it despite how it's -constantly- being updated on a near-daily basis.

In some ways, it's a lot better than RPG Maker, one of them being that you're placed in a spot where you -have- to make your own graphics, your own story, your own everything.

There's been some people that've been able to make sidescrollers and space-shooters in the engine (which surprises me still), along with some other game variants.

I'd just figured this might've been a good place to post some information about it, considering there's a lot of starting / aspiring game-developers here.

Hmm... Sounds intriguing. I'll take a closer look at these things at a later time. I'm especially interested in that Doom RPG, there. What's the battle system, Turn-Based or Tactical (like Arc the Lad)? I like the look, I've always thought the optimum NES Doom would've been an RPG.

The system is mainly turn-based, but there's been a lot of people that've implemented their own combat system into the engine. It's -wild- how flexible the ability to code for the game is, despite the language for it being so simple.
