The Doom4Guy Personality

Recommended Posts

I never saw the hud face reactions as any real indication of what his personality is like as they're natural reactions given the situation. He's up against the forces of fucking hell, which would explain why he's happy when he finds bigger and badder weapons. The only thing we really know about him is that he's pretty altruistic, given the backstory of how he ended up stationed on mars(i.e. refusing to open fire on unarmed civilians), and his willingness to die for humanity's sake in Doom 2(and if you consider it cannon, how he stayed in hell forever to keep the demons in line at the end of Doom 64).
Hopefully the new game will keep his personality as vague as that. All you need to know is "he's a good guy, he's gonna save the day".

Someone let loose an Archvile around here?

D4Guy will be a black gay guy that goes to the rescue of the marine he loves, something similar to the original Dead Space plot which Isaac goes to save his wife but now adapted to please the minotiries.

The final scene will be similar to DS: he discovers his loved marine is already dead, so he takes off his helmet and it will shock the player for being a black guy the same way Samus shocked the player after taking off the helmet and the player discovers he is she in the ending of Metroid.

I kinda agree. I always saw him as a badass survivor who got lucky, but as time goes on, is more and more skilled at staying alive after figuring this whole thing out.

I'd imagine him a bit more like Hicks from Aliens, one of the last surviving marines. Not some crazy violence junkie. Even Master Chief is a bit the same way, he runs around killing aliens, but at the end he's still humble.

Grinning upon picking up a chain gun or something, nothing crazy about that I guess heh...

Well, id won't be able to please everyone. Some people want DooM guy one way, some want him another way... We'll just see I guess.

IMO, I found those quotes very cringe worthy. Its hard to imagine the actual doomguy saying such juvenile and corny one liners and I cant imagine anyone mentioning sex while killing demons.

Okey, okey okey. I'll admit. Many of the lines that I wrote were cheesy. I wanted to imagine Doom guy having an immature personality to match the brutal doom style of game play considering that brutal doom has a button you can press that lets Doom guy spit out some really cheesy one-liners. That's the style of presentation that I imagined when I was conceptualizing Doom:Seven Sons. Doom 3 had a more serious presentation towards it's story, characters, and game play to give the game a more unique feel since Doom 3 was essencially a reimagining of the original. The original doom on the other hand didn't take itself very seriously since it was given a very over the top presentation which is what I wanted to go for for Seven Sons.

No. Please God no. NOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Take it easy. It's just a concept. Besides, like I said. I don't think that ID Software is going to break the tradition of having a silent protagonist anyway.

I bet my 2 balls he will talk, but you will be able to play while some talk happens, I also predict some cutscenes.

Doom guy never talked before so I kinda doubt it.

Then again neither did BJ Blazcowicz and he does now...

Some people may want him to say ridiculous over the top lines like in Brutal DooM, some might not. I guess you can't please everyone.

People always call her a female protagonist. The suit of armor is the protagonist. She just takes the credit at the end of the game.

Doom4guy should participate in interactive cut scenes like Mass Effect, but more like Alpha Protocol where they're timed and better. You have the choice to kill other characters by your choices in dialog and then people will always hate you for whatever choice you make like Walking Dead. Yeah people love that game. They both have zombies. Make sure he dies at the end.

ooo little girl escort missions too. People love those in Walking Dead and Amy. Maybe a baby imp that needs a mother and Doom4Guy needs to raise it to prove that not all demons are bad and when baby imp grows up he can teach his brethren that invasion is bad, thus winning the war through politics and your choices. Think of it, baby imp in one hand plasma rifle in the other. The baby imp can be voice acted by none other than Katy Perry. She's done video games before.

Wolfenstein worked with a talking protagonist, therefore it may encourage id to make a talking doomguy.

There should be none. Doomguy should be the player's embodiment in the game, not some mute and "mysterious" idiot who everyone apparently loves. *cough* Gordon Freeman *cough*

Ha I thought the twist to the second game was going to be and then he wakes up from a fantasy where the doctors said you've been unconscious for a while now after the attack from the first game. It would have tied into him being King of the Ant Lions.

I wouldn't blame him for dreaming/day dreaming that up. His job looks boring after all.

Doom4Guy takes off helmet at the end to reveal baron head with horns that wouldn't fit in the helmet.

IIRC Romero said that the player is supposed to be the Doomguy in the first two games. Giving him lines or even an opinion could clash with that idea for some players. I think ID pulled him off quite well in Doom 3, he's just sort of there and does what he needs to do, but will still react appropriately (like when he first sees the vagary boss).

For Doomguy in Doom 4, I want them to pretty much stick to how he is in Doom 3. The only thing I would change is to have him break the fourth wall ever so slightly. Not to really interact or share anything, but for the player to see that the Doomguy is simply aware that he or she is there. The player is controlling him after all, and it would be cool - and perhaps more thrilling (during fights) - to see some empathy there.

Having silent protagonists only works if the entire game is in first person. When the main character is a mute and the game has cut scenes the main character comes off as a shallow shell of a man more than anything.

It went from being like waiiit, no I disagree, to, Oh I see what's going on here... Perfect slow decline into madness. 10/10.

I like Doom 3 guy as he was. He looks friggin badass in my opinion and has just the right reactions in cutscenes.

One thing I hope they don't do is have cutscenes for every new enemy like they did in Doom 3 and Quake 4. I feel like suddenly encountering a new monster is way more interesting and surprising than seeing a cutscene that is all drawn out and introduces it. You feel safe, etc... When the game is playing though you're caught off guard and are like "OH SHIT WTF IS THAT!!"

I remember watching my buddies play DooM 2 and hearing them say WTF IS THAT THING!!!! on encountering revenants, mancubuses, etc was priceless. They only probably played the DooM shareware at some point in their lives and nothing more.

And I remember myself when I was a kid playing DooM feeling the same way on encountering a new monster. Seeing a Demon for the first time on E1M3 after nothing but zombies and imps. Encountering not 1 but 2 Barons of Hell all of a sudden on E1M8 making their loud roaring noise as the doors open up. Hearing the cyberdemon's footsteps for the first time and thinking it was 2 monsters infighting at first. Then seeing it and having it massacre me with rockets.... Seeing an archvile for the first time.... Seeing a mancubus for the first time... etc... Such good moments.

In DooM 3 I didn't feel this so much at all since each monster had their own cutscene. I think that maybe those dudes in Resurrection of Evil with the screens for mouths may not have had a cutscene so those guys successfully created good shock value on the first encounter.

Yeah, you can have a cinematic in-game introduction to a new enemy, which will work better than a cut scene. The bruiser bros you mention is a good example or the fiends in Quake.

Yea, I agree completely. They wanted their introduction to be scary but ironically they made them LESS scary because you know that they can't do anything to you. Going down a moody and dimly-lit hallway with tons of marine and demon corpses and opening a door only to reveal an archvile just in front of you is a lot more effective. I'm not saying it would be scary but it would make the player actually feel something.
