Everytime I check out this thread, I want to throw my map into the trash, because it looks so inadequate. I noticed a big big difference in lighting in other people's maps compared to mine. It seems mine are missing some... contrast. But no matter how dark I make the sectors, it always looks kinda different. Something to do with the OpenGL renderer?

You have nothing to worry about Elend. The stuff you've posted previously is sharp (examples below). That room with the pillars and oval sky portal is especially tasty. I actually used that as inspiration for the Infinite Void map I'm currently working on. You can rest easy in the knowledge that you've got proper talent.

 

As for the lighting, what format do you map in? My stuff is all UDMF and I make heavy usage of dynamic lights (heavy is an understatement) which create a very different look to manual lighting sectors

Yeah @elend you are fairly new compared to those authors, yet you've already shown a good grasp of the editor. I look forward to your next works :)

@Bridgeburner56  @catpho Oh god, too much compliments, you guys. I was not fishing for compliments, but big thanks to all of you guys. I also map in UDMF and actually try to use a combination of sector lights and dynamic lights. Sectors for shadows and basic contrast and dynamic lights for that addition "ooomph" when needed. Thanks to Dragonfly I can now also make proper lava glow that creeps up the wall. Stuff like this already helps big time. New screens coming up soon, just finished the "bloodroom" and the "library". xD

@Zanieon looks like QUAKE3! Wonderful work! How did You do shadow on last screenshot between two metal skulls bars?

That'll be a dynamic light is my guess. They automatically create shadowmaps around 1 sided linedefs

@Bridgeburner56I thought this is a transparent 3d floor because it looks very sharp. I haven't play with shadows in gzdoom yet. I thought the shadows are soft in gzdoom.

Is there any sample wad to show how shadows work in gzdoom?
