Best simulation of "falling to death" in vanilla?

Recommended Posts

Creating platforming puzzles has the unfortunate absence of suspense due to Doom guys ability to withstand a fall to any height with no damage repercussions. But lets say you wanted to have the player fall to his death in some way or another. Falling into an inescapable 20% damage lava pit usually isn't very climactic, and telefragging a voodoo doll has the instantaneous effect, but without the dread of actually falling, and the sound of teleporting is a bit misleading from the desired effect.

so given the standard doom effects, linedef types, and tricks, what do you think is the best way to simulate falling to death?

One map I'm making replicates fall damage with two dummy sectors. When the player goes over the cliff, it starts a crusher over a barrel in one sector, which is timed to explode just as the player hits the ground. When the barrel explodes, it pushes a voodoo doll over a teleport which makes it telefrag another voodoo doll. Of course, it only works once, but it instakills the (non-cheating) player without any teleport sound.

one thing I've seen done is to have a line slightly off the platform that triggers a voodoo to get crushed, so you take damage while falling and die presumably before hitting the bottom of the pit. The drawbacks are that it gets completely broken in multiplayer, also depending on your platforming segment it might be possible to trigger the crushers by accident, or get av-jumped across the death-lines, etc.

I too would be interested to see if any clever alternatives exist. wtb -400% damage sector special.

"Epic 2 MAP14" is your answer. Check that map out, it has multiple cool gimmicks to simulate falling to death.

You can also trigger the deadly crushers without falling in that map. Just walk on the edge at the start a little.
