FreeDoom graphic/music rescources

Recommended Posts

Right, I've done a few sketches of ideas I had for FreeDoom enemies. I'm aware that they look similar to the original enemies. This is also my first thread, so forgive me if I get anything wrong (alternatively you can shout at me as though I've peed the carpet)
http://sta.sh/05wlp9gtnvj
Pain Bringer
http://sta.sh/0if8xdfp6bh
Snarlorb
http://sta.sh/029au0swlk2
Cyber Monarch
http://sta.sh/022uqnzb2555
Pain Lord (this one's just an improved version of the original)
http://sta.sh/0c2kgu3v9dn
Kacrosphere
http://sta.sh/01yxelcq2it5
Freedoom fighter (I just felt like drawing him too)

- Kacrosphere, Colors you picked aren't so great (How bout Red/Grey/Black) ...

Can somebody please rename this thread to "Miscellanious Freedoom rescources" or something along those lines, preferably spelt correctly?

Anyway, here's a few midis I've been working on for Freedoom:
One inspired by Painkiller
http://www.mediafire.com/download/ldkajoo1qaqaasq/Freedoom_mazmon_2.mid
And one inspired by Freedoom's E1M1. This one's pretty epic, IMO.

Bonus remake of the Freedoom fighter:

It's a Samanthite, or something :D
I tried to get Samantha looking like Stitch, seeing as they're pretty similar. The eye highlights look pretty nice. Maybe the "posessed" Samanthites/lizards/ reptillians' eyes go dull, since they're under enemy control, so when they're free the shine returns? I know that'd take way too much space to program into the actual game, but it's a nice concept anyway.

I think you should replace dave3d08.mid, because it sounds like this. Can you unhear it? (for best results, turn off annotations)

map21, or you could just go here.

With the video as context, the midi almost sounds like this:

f*** me, rape me, f*** me, rape me...

Heh, I see what you mean. It's not the worst one, but it could certainly do with a little tweaking. I'd be happy to fix a lot of Freedoom's music, but it's kinda hard getting other people to want it replaced. Sometimes I feel like Raymoohawk and I are the only ones taking this project seriously.

Nope

several people are actively making contributions to freedoom. for example protox and catop have been doing a lot of stuff in the mapping department. and theres the graphical stuff that soda, dawerecat and others have been working on. and theres at least two aditional people who have been working on and off in new tracks. the thing is the project leads have jobs in the informatics field that are very time demanding and something like that isn't really theyre fault.

iirc during the last oficial release there was a bit of talk about having a six month release cycle, wich means we are still in schedule ;-)

Oh good, I'm glad other people are doing their best too :) I understand about life getting in the way, and that's forgiveable. We're all just human, after all :D
Who would I speak to about replacing music?

catoptromancy is going to make a sticky thread soon where submissions will be collected in a more standarized way. you could post here in the meanwhile or talk to him

Now i'm sad... :(

I not only map there i'm also trying to improve my skill to help ever on texturing and pixel edit and is not a easy thing also, to be sure everything is hard, we have only experience in diferent areas like raymo is a good "graphices" (i hope spelled it right) and i'm good on mapping i'll never have skill like him to sprite editing but i at leaest can some experience to know how to do a small crate of missiles.
https://github.com/freedoom/freedoom/issues/91

And i work to freedoom at least 1 time in a week, but we all do hard for freedoom each one in his own place of power

Heh, I'd be too, if someone mistakenly accused me of not doing my part for Freedoom. It'll be way nicer if we can see what each other is doing, without having to scour threads thinking "is this current?"
For instance, if we have someone compiling all the new stuff into a wad regularly, then posting it so we can all see where we're up to, that'd be mighty nice. I could do that, if people wanted it, just as long as I know which stuff to add and which stuff to replace.

i do most of my work and i upload then by irc or by issues so because it was so hard to see my works and when i was unknow to community i put a post there abot my works in freedm and only few commented like (please dont bump old topics):

http://www.doomworld.com/vb/freedoom/68135-protoxs-freedm-ideas/
http://www.doomworld.com/vb/freedoom/64294-freedm-fix-updates/

most of other topics abot freedm only cato and fraggle give me motivation, so i deciced to work more privately adding stuffs by irc and issues list.

Check out Latest Development Log for stuff that has been added to the repo recently. Check out the Daily Build that includes all those changes into the iwads.

There are many tracks that are doubled or tripled over the three iwads. This was only to make sure each map had a track. Almost all of FreeDM does not have its own music, and about half of phase1. Probably all the music tracks can be shifted to different maps, added, removed or fixed.

Almost all the music was hastily replaced. Dave3D stuff was submitted and swapped in. Then it was discovered that boom202 could not play empty midis, so all music tracks were swapped in as placeholders. There are quite a few Dave3D tracks that are on repo, that were not linked into the wad.

http://www.doomworld.com/vb/freedoom/46675-musical-plagiarism-in-freedoom/

The entire music situation was a combination of two hasty fixes.

Here is a lengthy report of stuff that needs work. When something is labelled "done" only means that it is technically finished, but still can be replaced or adjusted.

It would be nice to replace the music that sounds too similar to doom tracks. Have any doom-clone midis been removed inbetween 0.9 and trunk?

The empty MID problem was fixed as of this commit.

You can see a list of "duplicate" tracks here (that's the output of music-duplicates.py). Those are tracks that we're reusing because we don't have a full set of music.

That said, the music tracks for FreeDM I think fit fairly well in their current form. I was talking with Sodaholic about this several days ago - when we did all the work on FreeDM about a year ago I went through and made a deliberate effort to select music tracks that I felt "fit" the levels. You might notice how the more compact levels have fast-paced tracks for example, while DM22 is a large, open level and I picked a much slower track for it. I'm no musical expert and I didn't put a huge amount of effort into it, but I'm pretty satisfied with the result.

Ideally I'd like to see the same kind of thing done for the other two IWADs. In general the music we have has been assigned to levels just to fill gaps and without any deliberate attempt to match it to levels. In a way I feel like that's even more important than replacing "duplicates". If you're planning to replace FreeDM's music, please try to do it in a thoughtful way and don't just replace music for its own sake.

We should do this too. Some of the tracks are too close for comfort.

seeing how theres people willing to work on new tracks i think we should aspire to not repeating tracks

Of course - we should definitely aspire to have a unique track for every level. But I think selecting music tracks to fit the levels is more important.

The output of the music-duplicates script is slightly misleading, because when a track is used for multiple levels, either can be considered a duplicate. The script assumes that if a track is, for example, used for a Phase 2 level and a FreeDM level, then it must the FreeDM level that is the "duplicate". Historically there's some basis for that assumption, but it's worth pointing out that the duplication can be resolved by replacing the music for either level.

Well if i'm not whong thats is impossible technicaly (unless mapinfo) because some levels REALLY use other music from past levels example is episode 4 of doom 1 they use musics from episodes 1 2 and 3, in doom2 and heretic the same happen. only strife dont repeate musics.
