Name a better map order for Ultimate Doom: Episode 4

Recommended Posts

I've always found the map order for Episode 4 of Ultimate Doom to be.... questionable. I think we can all agree that E4M2 should have appeared later in the mapset due to it's steep difficulty, but in all honesty the entire episode feels unbalanced.

So, what order do you feel Episode 4's maps should have appeared in and why?

Mine:

E4M4 - Short and straightforward, a good opener.
E4M1 - Same but with stronger opposition.
E4M3
E4M2
E4M5
E4M7
E4M6 - Tall, epic design perfect for pre-boss finale.
E4M8

Actually, we don't all agree. The problem with E4 isn't the map order as much as the challenge itself drops off after E4M2. Even from a pistol start most of the later E4 maps aren't all THAT hard. E4M1 and 2 would be a fine start to what should have been an increasingly (or at least, reliably) brutal episode.

The balance problem might be in the maps themselves. All of them are unorthodox in some way, none of them is well accustomized to be a starter map, and some are too gimmicky and/or harsh for a comfortable gameplay. While they look similar, they often vary in many more aspects than just difficulty - for example length, monster density, cruelty... Anyway, here is my idea how I'd sort them:

E4M4 - Because it's the easiest one. Relatively small and simple as well.
E4M3 - Not so difficult either, but a more complex one.
E4M7 - Even more complex and relatively impressive one.
E4M1 - New punishment begins with this little bastard.
E4M5 - Longer, feels different and hostile, but not hard if you play cautiously.
E4M2 - Punishment escalates.
E4M6 - Miniboss map, also difficult and intriguing-looking.
E4M8 - Final boss map.

Secret: E4M1 (This level is very different to the rest of the maps in Doom, the NIN secret also cements my opinion of this map being here).
