Maps with areas which transistion from day to night?

I was just playing Duke Nukem Caribbean and got to the Lost Lagoon level, because when you go through certain areas you wind up pressing buttons near the pyramid things which lower and when you return to the areas you were once at they appear to have changed from day to night.

Well I was wondering has this concept ever been used in custom Doom wads?

Here's a vanilla episode that sort of simulates day/night cycle, but not within same map (instead of using triggers, the night time is on a different level):

Ah, I played that wad long ago but I don't think I ever got to that map in it before I stopped playing it, I should go back to it and see for myself.
