I think you can gib zombies with the plasma gun and chainsaw, not sure about imps though. Can someone clarify that for me?

Piper Maru, the truth is that a monster only gets gibbed if its health lowers below the negative value of the monster's start health in a single hit. For example, the Zombieman's start health is 20, so his health needs to be lowered below -20 in a single fatal hit, in order to make him gib. One chainsaw hit or one non-berserk punch each makes a maximum damage of 20, so that they cannot gib a Zombieman or any other monster (all other monsters have higher health than a Zombieman). A single pistol/shotgun/chaingun/SSG pellet deals maximum damage 15, so that it also cannot gib enemies. However, a plasma shot has a maximum damage 40. A rocket has maximum damage 160, plus 128 splash damage. BFG ball deals up to 800 impact damage, and each of the extra tracers can do damage over 100. These weapons can gib some low-tier enemies.

Play on rhinoduck's "pain" servers in ZDaemon (fast + 2x damage monsters) and you'll see things gibbing a lot more often. :)

It cannot gib low tier enemies, because its fire consists of 20 pellets, each one doing only 5-15 damage. As I said, the critical gibbing hit needs to be performed in one hit.

So why doesn't hell knight gib if I hit it for 800dmg with BFG when it has 1hp? :((

Obviously because he has no gibbing animation. :)

Only Zombiemen, Shotgunguys, Chaingunners, Imps and SSNazis have a gibbing animation. But with some DEHACKED editing, any monster can be assigned a gibbing animation that will trigger when the monster's health is lowered below the negative value of its spawn health.
