How do I make monsters teleport into an area when I walk in?

Recommended Posts

I want to make a sector where you walk in, and monsters start teleporting around you. Can somebody explain to me how to do that in Zdoom?

You can easily do this in vanilla doom, actually. No need for Zdoom at all. Check out Plutonia MAP20, and have a look at how the Revenants teleport in near the end. That's an easy method for creating a teleporting monster trap.

Basically, you'll want to create an off-map monster closet with a linedef teleporter leading to whatever area you want your monsters to end up in. Then aggro the monsters either via sound (e.g., they appear as soon as you fire a single shot) or by lowering or raising a barricade between the monsters and the teleporting linedef.

Since you are using ZDoom ....

First off, lay down several Mapspot (thing 9001) and give them all the same TID if only one type of monster is to be spawned,
or vary the TIDs for each type of monster to be spawned.
Play around with that.

The advantage of this is, you can determine the precise location where the spawning is to occur.

The spawning process can be initiated in several ways, two of which are

1. with thing 9998 - actor enters sector
place it anywhere in the sector in question and attach a script to it

due to the nature of 9998, it is always repeatable.

2. with a linedef triggered by walk over
if only one type of monster is to be spawned, then attach a spawn special to this linedef
if several monsters are to be spawned, then attach a script to this linedef
set the flag to repeatable if so needed.

For an example, check this out.
I went the route with 'Actor enters Sector' and a simple script.
