Most atmospheric Wad?

I'm looking for atmospheric wads, stuff like Unloved and Doom 64 are good.

Well you could always try PSX Doom and Final Doom TC and the Lost Levels addon.

serpent.wad for Hexen <-- highly recommended for its character leveling system, new spells, and extra weapons for all characters, not to mention hordes of new enemies and wicked puzzles. If nothing else you can get immersed in how truly large a dungeon-scape The Ultimate Doomer created. I remember playtesting this one summer for him 5 years ago. I gave my left nut in how much feedback I gave to him to improve it, and I think he really created something special for Hexen lovers out there. Ahem, but for Doom stuff, see my recommendations above.

I'd immediately recommend Doxylamine Moon and ALT.WAD if you're looking for moody Doom levels. Two of my faves for exactly that reason. ALT.WAD's more subdued soundset, crazy plot, desolate train stations, "GOD IS DEAD"-ness and weird dreamlike progression makes it one of the best "adventure" level sets ever made to me.

edit: the BTSX train stations come a close second place, love that music

Try out Threshold of Pain, created by scalliano. It's very much in the spirit of the PSX/64 versions of Doom, and highly atmospheric.

Off the top of my head: Deus Vult and the middle/late maps of Deus Vult II are good at creating an atmosphere of oppression and being deep, deep in Hellish territory.
Oh--an old obscure ZDoom level called Barista is quite eerie at times as well.
Tei Tenga seemed atmospheric back when I first played it all these years ago but I don't know if it holds up now that the novelty's worn off.

One that I have fond memories of is RTC-3057 hub 1, for the storytelling, aesthetics, and especially Julian's work on the soundtrack. The gameplay gets remarkably switch-hunty, but I found it immersive in spite of that.

RottKing's level Bite from BTSX episode 2 is also very atmospheric to me. The dim underground aesthetic and cruel gameplay work together really well to create a dank, oppressive, evil locale. ( And maybe the music too :-) )

Some others that come to mind for memorably well-crafted distinct, immersive locales:
Reconstruction/Decomposition (Da Werecat/mrthejoshmon)
Thunderpeak Powerplant (Vader)
Monster Hunter 1 and 2 (didy)

Alien Vendetta had a ridiculously high amount of maps that had an amazing atmosphere, and each of them strike a different chord with me... Beast Island for example had a melancholic and explorational atmosphere... the viewpoint where you see the castle in the distance had a lasting effect on me, and each of Kim's levels had moments that made my jaw drop, and his levels had a very eery and haunting feeling that was achieved through his dramatic lighting.. there's ofcourse more maps in AV like Nemesis but I think I'm preaching to the choir. :P

I think "The Muscus Flow"(CC2 MAP24) is by far my most favorite map in terms of atmosphere. The midi track plus the map itself feels amazing every time I play.

+1. gameplay is frustrating as all hell until you know the map very well, but damn that midi and canyon aesthetic are a great combo.

I'd toss a vote in for phobos: anomaly reborn as well, but I might just be a sucker for dark/void areas.

MassMouth 2. If you're looking for atmosphere you can't go wrong here. Massmouth is great as well, of course. :)

The Talosian Incident. For a true 90's experience.

I really gotta finish playing this someday. Got stuck in one of the early levels for a long time due to a key hidden in secret location (and no hints to that location). Spent so many hours walking around aimlessly all over the map trying to find that damn key. Other than that part, it was great stuff!

Grove. Foreverhood.

I honestly found Unloved pretty overrated. The mapping just seemed... Generic. Like any basic "spooky" level with the right textures but without that extra something to be special.

IIRC it was map03 or map04, I remember it as a pretty frustrating level; but after that level it's really worth to play this wad imo.

+1 Though I hope to see S.U.P.E.R. Natural updated soon.
