I haven't noticed any idiocy lately. In fact, the last months have been marked by Linguica's return and sudden enthusiasm on everything Doom, especially technical.

Looking at posts around 2002, I see lots of banter within a closely packed community who knew each other too well. Most of them no longer post here but seem to be active at irc.oftc.net #zdoom, talking trivia (unless I'm wrong, as I haven't visited that chatroom lately).

Honestly though, I've never noticed much of a change, Doomworld (and the other Doom forums) actually seem pretty decent compared to pretty much the rest of the internet.

If you ever waste your time teading YouTube comments, visiting other game forums, or playing games online, you'll see the people there are generally total douchebags because of their percieved anonymity. Here, we have a bit of douchery from time to time, but most people are generally on the nicer half of the spectrum and are great at cooperating with WAD consturction and other similar things.

And yes, modern gamers definitely seem to have severe mental issues compared to anything i have ever interacted with during my hardcore gaming years.

Online gaming is a never-ending source of hilarity when it comes to trying to decipher the most incomprehensible & brainless bullshit. Reactions and comments are so often priceless in their haste.

YouTube on the other hand is pretty fucking depressing. There's no rush, everyone can comment at their own pace, yet it seems to be plagued with dickheads, illiterates and try-hards. It's all just rather sad to think that people like that are apparently the future.

If one were to take a look at the type of threads we have, you'd find everything you would except on a gaming site. Topics range from movies, to politics, to satire, etc.

I think when Doom 4 comes out, there will probably a surge in membership. No doubt that should spur even more vitality to the modding community for the classic games. imo

Bethesda will certainly push the original Doom games when the new one comes out.

I don't think Doom, as we know it is going anywhere, anytime soon. It would be like saying the original Super Mario Bros game will soon fade into obscurity.

Nope, seems like the same DoomWorld to me, albeit with less news (not a lot of Doom related stuff going on; still waiting for the beta I didn't preorder Wolfenstein: TNO for because WTNO was excellent on its own) and some new faces.

Still the best forum group I've had the pleasure of being a part of too; the moderation is fair and kept up with, the signatures aren't giant spammy picture messes, there aren't giant obnoxious ads everywhere that break up posts, and stupid is dealt with quickly (even my own stupid - when I look at my earlier posts I shudder wondering if I was really that stupid, until I realize I'm still that frickin' stupid IRL.)

Actually coming back to lurk has made me miss my old days making levels (not finishing them, mind you, I don't have that kind of follow through in anything) and I'm excited for the time I get another PC in the next decade or so, and I'm happy to see a lot of you guys are still around.

Plus this site helps me keep perspective; it's nice not living in a bubble with one sided opinions and being able to share and learn with people from all over the place in a forum that doesn't descend into flamewar madness with opposing opinions is nice.

Honestly, I feel like things have cooled down here quite a bit from the early days. I joined in, what, 2000 (my God, has it been that long?) and I remember times when this place was a hot mess. Maybe it's because I don't follow the forum as much as I used to, but it seems to me that there has been way less drama around here than there used to be. Oh sure, the drama isn't completely gone, but I remember the days when there were certain topics that couldn't even be mentioned without it quickly escalating into a flamewar, and pretty much everyone had at least one personal grudge with another member that they would never let go.

I mean yeah, to this day, things still get heated on occasion, that's just gonna happen on the Internet, but it's nothing like what it used to be, where people were constantly looking to start shit just for the lulz. Hell, that's true even of other forums I frequent, to be honest. I think in general, yeah you do still see tempers flare from time to time, but not much more so than you'd see IRL, when in the past, people saw the Internet as just an excuse to act like assholes.

I really do not get this comment, between 2004 and 2010 i have never seen anything even resembling the trolling, asshole levels, or the near mentally handicapped behaviour one can notice in a second in these times, and i was a hardcore gamer, visited computer sub-culture irc's in those periods (not anymore now for many years), forums, chats, in game chats, etc. And there certainly where no psychopath suicide trolls whom believe they are the sane clean up crew of societies worldwide.

And together with reading archived end 90's messages on boards really states the opposite of some people their 'it used to be worse' comments.
i suspect some people just ended up on almost obscure sub-culture sites on which they base those statements. maybe like the doom sub-culture with gen X its cynical youth culture. (not meant in a bad way.)

Hell even on the ps2 and online shooters for that platform people just played and actually communicated as a team with only a curse when they lost.


Things are really getting out of hand with tards using hive mind website behaviour and the logic "keeping the net weird." hell when i see them using their hive terms i immediately think they have mental problems and nobody to help them. and the starwars live chat for the live stream on Youtube really strengthens this thought line i have about modern internet users.

I agree with this. There was nowhere near the same amount of stupidity on Youtube, online gaming, social media, and just the internet in general around that time (that I can recall anyway.) There were no thumbwhoring commenters on Youtube or meme-spewing Reddit nonsense. Not that I'm 100% against the changes since then but there's a lot more annoying trolls and just asshole people in general these days. Probably a lot more kids on the internet and Youtube in general, spitting out constant bullshit like "U Mad Bro??" and stuff like that. I've been told to "get out kid" on multiple occasions which is pretty funny considering these are probably a bunch of CoD playing 13 years olds who think they're cool because they tripped and touched a girl's boobs by accident during gym class. I think Youtube has been sensationalizing this "trolling" mentality even more lately with trolling memes and videos getting hundreds of thousands of views.
