I would be interested in such a challenge. All forum members gather in one room, they are given a pen, a piece of paper and 10 minutes to recall as many megawads and episodes as they can without looking anywhere. The top 3 get to choose a custom title.

Search for episodes and megawads in the /idgames archives and other websites. Be sure to find the release date (Month Day, Year) of an episode or a megawad.

See, it's real tricky to determine just what the first wad was, because Romero was actually stealing design blueprints from Erik Alm. Not many know this, but they were linked psychically together in their dreamspace, swapping design notes and bodies occasionally, until Romero stole all of Alm's ideas when he made Wolfenstein 3D: Final Doom. There was a lawsuit filed (which eventually resulted in Carmack closing id games and moving on to work on the Ouya Rift: Five Nights At Phil Fish's), but it was never proven in a court of law whether Scythe was meant to be the original IWAD or not. I've heard sources say that Tom Hall had actually been wire-tapping Alm and Romero's astral lounge conversations, but until Hexen 3 comes out I can't confirm or deny its validity.

Also some astrologists say that time is an illusion, so it's possible all custom wads start and end with Mordeth.wad

On a slightly related note, it was nice when you could browse through things in chronological order on /idgames. The URLs are now presented with the filename at the end, but it used to be the file number. I had a great time looking through things by their number.

Is there a way to get the URLs to display in the old way like it used to be? I think I got to like 700 or something before the change.

@Doomkid: You can still type the urls with numbers, and they will be automatically redirected. So if you want to view wads by their order, type this into the url prompt:
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/?id=1
Then this
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/?id=2
Etc, up to the highest numbers (currently over 18000).

Of course, you can also use the search function, which is ascendingly sorted by release date by default.

Yeah, I tried to automate the process, grepping for 10+ instances of MAPxx entries. It seems quite a few WADs have multiple directories, which kind of screws up the results ... Any idea how to overcome that?
