Quick newbie-ish question: best doom engine?

Recommended Posts

Ok, I'm actually gonna play doom on the pc (I only had doom64), and I was wondering, what's generally coinsidered the best engine? Sorry if this question sounds lame.

Ok, maybe engine isn't the right word.
Anyways, I stumbled across Zdoom in another post and I'm donloading it now. Seems to be what I was looking for.

I wouldn't recommend Zdoom (although virtually everyone else here would).

My personal recommendations are Legacy and EDGE. Also take a look at Vavoom and Jdoom. In the end though, use whatever you feel comfortable with.

(Don't listen to liam, he's a religious fanatic)

Zdoom is good for features
PrBoom is good for oldskool gameplay

JDOOM!!!!!
I dont care for the models really but the lighting and particle effects rock. Zdoom is way more stable though. Too bad the colors always seem faded.

ZDoom is good for ease of use and simplicity.
JDoom is good for 3D accelerator cards.
PrBoom is good that original feel, only newer.
Legacy is good for 3D acceleration and room-over-room levels.
Doom95 is good for Quakers.
EDGE is good for QDOOM.
ZDoomGL is good for experimental usage of advanced 3D acceleration features.
Vavoom is good for healthy, shiny-looking hair.

Doom95 is good for Quakers.

I don't get that one. Doom95 appears to be the only port that maintains the exact mouse feeling of the DOS version.

I dont get the point of using the mouse in the original DooM. How were you supposed to get around quickly?

I assume you are working on the premise that the slide bar was the max mouse speed (9), so yes, too slow, you had to edit default.cfg to speed mouse up, some people went as high as 300-400

I'm sorry to say this, but the skilled gamers of the world left you behind back in 1995.

My personal favorites right now are ZDoom, Legacy, EDGE, and PRBoom.
Btw, these are not "engines", they are source ports. They're called this because they're ports of the original Doom source. :)

Mouse and keyboard is easily the fastest and most responsive form of control, especially when using mouselook with a port like Jdoom.

Jdoom is my preference - the atmosphere is excellent.

MBF is good for....?
It seems a really good port.It looks good and plays really well.
I just can't get any damn sound or if I do it's distorted, shame.

Yes, and they're also engines.

Yeah, but who'd write it? Everyone's biased against one port or the other ;)

That would be the fault of Allegro.

Wait till you see BOOMDSDAY - a BOOMIZED version of JDOOM- meaning it supports all the BOOM stuff. Plus it does hi-res DeePsea style graphics - a lot easier to do than the external PNG/TGA stuff:)

Working out the final little glitches. You may want to turn off particles (which look cool), unless you have a high-end machine. I have to admit the texturing and lighting is stunning compared to ZDOOM. For sure an atmo boost.

I like the 3D models - can be turned off - but then you'll bitch about "fuzzy sprites":)

ZDOOM has the most flexibility (scripting) - alas level designers tend to not use many of them.

As LTB said "whatever you feel comfortable with."

Thanks for the replies. So far Zdoom seems alright, but the color banding looks ugly, and it flickers in full screen (for me at least). I also got a headache when using the look up/down feature cuz of the warped perspective, hehe. I'll look at some other ports.

Liam gave a half assed reply:

SO USE PRBOOM INSTEAD DAMMIT, IT HAS EVERYTHING MBF HAS AND MORE.

PRBoom uses Timidity for midi, though, so find the EAWPats set (it's a 22Mb rar file), extract that and Timidity to [same drive as PRBoom is on]:\Timidity and enjoy.

Liam the Bard ignorantly muttered:

I call them source ports. You can call them what you want-engines, source ports, etc.

I found an excellent effect on jdoom - using the glowflat and glowtexture statements in the ded files, you can give effects like glowing blood, which is a good thing as there's gallons of it on it's way in our up-coming wadfiles.

I had the same problem, it's normally the fault of Allegro. PRBoom has many of teh MBF functions, even if teh feel is a little different. I miss the features of MBF, but I'm happy with ZDoom.
