Julian Posted May 29, 2002 Ethh is launching a mapping contest ending Thursday June the 27th this year, at 02:00 AM CEST. The deal is to edit a map based on Plutonia map 11, hunted. What could you get as a prize? Nothing less than a Game Boy Advance with your favorite game cartridge (DOOM of course), an original copy of Postal or an out-of-the-dust Hacker's guide to DOOM, depending on your rank. More information are available on Ethh's news page. 0 Share this post Link to post
Kid Airbag Posted May 29, 2002 Uhm, I'm a bit confused...does it have to just be based on, like inspired by, map 11 of Plutonia or does it actually have to use that level as a base? 0 Share this post Link to post
999cop Posted May 29, 2002 Yeah, I'm a bit confused also. I mean, what's the goal of this contest exactly? Are we just asked to make the most best-looking map based on "Hunted"? 0 Share this post Link to post
Kid Airbag Posted May 29, 2002 It said on his page best looking and best gameplay, but I'm not sure if we're actually supposed to use the real map as a base or not... 0 Share this post Link to post
Vegeta Posted May 29, 2002 I think it's obvious, the goal is make a map based on that level. It is ilegal use it as base and distribute it. 0 Share this post Link to post
Kid Airbag Posted May 30, 2002 Well on his page, he says take the map and add on to it. 0 Share this post Link to post
Arno Posted May 30, 2002 He describes the Doom Hackers Guide as a "true museum piece". That's happy news, since I own a copy of that book. WITH utilities CD. :) 0 Share this post Link to post
ethh Posted May 30, 2002 you have to start from plutonia map 11 for the contest, but then you can remove as well as adding stuff to the map. it's not illegal, because there is no map re distribution involved, since you have to own final doom in order to participate in the contest or play the map, since your map must be playable with doom2.exe v1.9 with -file plutonia or with plutonia's doom2.exe (which requires plutonia.wad as iwad). you do own an original copy of final doom or collector's doom, don't you ? 0 Share this post Link to post
Kid Airbag Posted May 30, 2002 Can I not use any of the original and just make my own interpretation? 0 Share this post Link to post
ethh Posted May 31, 2002 no, you have to start from plutonia.wad's map 11, and plutonia.wad must be loaded with your map, either by lauching the game from plutonia's doom2.exe, or, if for some reason you require it, doom2 v1.9's doom2.exe with -file plutonia.wad. 0 Share this post Link to post
stphrz Posted May 31, 2002 I would suggest making the maps compatible with PrBoom instead of the original Doom2.exe. Many people who would otherwise enter will not be able to due to the fact that Doom2.exe may not run on their machine (ie some version of windows like xp or 2000). Some people also run Linux, which also cannot run Doom2.exe. 0 Share this post Link to post
Kid Airbag Posted May 31, 2002 Well, after I'm done I'm going to extract the level using WinTex and send it in by itself, because I really don't feel like zipping up the entire Plutonia wad with one new level and sending it to you. 0 Share this post Link to post
ethh Posted May 31, 2002 - make the maps compatible with the original exes that i mention. if it works with prboom as well, fine. i provide floppies of dr-dos on my website that allow you to play doom2.exe outside windows. - you don't have to zip me the enitre plutonia wad. you have to send me the one map that you made. but it must be based on plutonia.wad, in such a way that you load it with plutonia's doom2.exe or with doom2.exe -file plutonia.wad yourwad.wad. 0 Share this post Link to post

ethh Posted June 5, 2002 fraggle said:Um, technically it is. Fredrik Posted June 5, 2002 Following that argument, you could as well take out one texture from plutonia.wad, release that whole WAD, and claim that it's legal because you can't play it without support by the original. 0 Share this post Link to post

Kid Airbag Posted June 6, 2002 It's not abandonware, just because sales have gone down doesn't mean they're not still selling it. 0 Share this post Link to post
