Lets talk about the story

Recommended Posts

In the E3 demo, they gave us zero details about the plot of Doom 4. However :

It seems that in Doom 4, instead of trying to create a portal, the UAC instead decides to mine this "Argent" thing that can power anything. And as we all know, whenever a plot device of these kinds (the finite fantasy resource plot device) shows up, the antagonists (the demons) would try to take control of it.

So, my speculation for the plot of Doom 4 is that :
-Argent is found and is discovered to be able to power anything
-The UAC tries to make an Argent-powered portal
-The UAC accidentally opens the portal to hell
-Demons show up
-Demons discovers Argent, wants it
-Doomguy shows up and kicks ass

I like how the UAC just immediately assumes that all chainsaws are just "weapons".

Only because there's no other use for them at the argent facility, just as the description says. I imagine that they'd be a common sight when terraforming.

I'd like the in-game origin of "argent" (which means silver) to remain unexplained, and only hinted at by the scenery.

Anyway, what's up? Are the demons on to steal this material? What are they gonna do with it? Is this basically a war on resources?

UAC scientists discovered trees in Hell that could survive on Mars' surface. You have been tasked to retrieve samples using your blackmarket chainsaw and trusty double barrel shotgun.

The reveal from last year seemed to allude that the UAC perhaps tried to control the Demons directly, a la what Betruger did in Doom 3. This is possibly done with the use of whatever Argent is (Could also just be the name of the location itself). The Cyberdemon for example seems to be armed with UAC technology, as opposed to some random tech. Perhaps a failed war machine?

Really? They have access to plasma rifles but someone decided to buy a chainsaw? The explanation from Doom 3 was better.

Much better. This excuse is the same as stop using your laptop to start using a typewrtiter again because it somehow, for you, looks awesome.

After about the fifth time watching the demo I started to wonder about the logistics of a chainsaw in a steel mill. Along with why the chainsaw would need two prongs on it.

The chainsaw is actually used for shaving. People are so manly over at UAC that they won't settle for wimpy disposable razors or shaving machines. Even the female employes use the chainsaws to shave their pits and whatnot.

I prefer Doom 3's explanation as well, but Doom 4's explanation is believable. Of course some people trained to be killers might be interested in some macabre novelty weapons. Probably not common, but the less disciplined marines might not have much restraint from buying things they shouldn't.

Someone legitimately using it as a potential illegal weapon would also explain why the demo shows it half-down into a corpse already, rather than just lying around in some random storage crate for the player to plunder.

Pretty much.

It would be really cool like if there's a level where you're on this garden and you can shoot/chop down the trees to kill the demons.

I prefer the chainsaw never being explained. If we explain that, then how do we explain torches in Hell? The imps craft them in their spare time when they're not torching things?

Demons gotta see, yo. Especially when they're working long hours building all those giant stone statues you see everywhere.

I've pitched it before, I'll pitch it again. Wise cracking Spider Mastermind comes over the intercom over and over again to taunt Doom Guy.

Doom Guy finds a baby imp he must raise and teach it to be good so one day it can run for demon president and declare a peace treaty against the humans. Think of the escort missions! Boosting baby imp to unlock a door for you. Baby imp gets kidnapped and raises the drama. Then Baby Imp turns against Doom Guy, bites him and he dies in the thrilling climax that will win a video game Oscar. Baby Imp realizes the error of her ways and why its bad to kill, because of killing the one person that she could rely on is now dead.

It sure beats Batruger as John Hammond and Swan as the Lawyer.

I thought Swann was a pretty kick ass lawyer, tbh. Then the books made him a weasel... Though, I guess it may be the other way around, depending on how close the novels follow the game's original plot.

No matter how many times I played the game, I never picked up on him being the lawyer until I started replaying last night. Batruger only wanted to make an amusement park with demons on Mars where it would be safe.

I actually kind of like that idea... Most of the UAC scientists probably don't see hell as a spiritual realm of evil, but as some sort of alien dimension. They discover strange things in that dimension and want to use it for their goals. One of their goals is to terraform Mars to become a second earth.

The whole demon's being researched-business in Doom3 seemed really really cliche and badly designed concept. Disintegrating enemies, next thing you know they are laying on operating tables and suspended in tanks. I felt like if the developer's weren't sure if they want them to be real species or SPIRITS of Hell that just manifest in fleshy form. Bit like with Betruger; aight that guy made a pact with Hell- wait a minute he's somekind of sorcerer now too?!

I like the idea that the demons augment themselves with tech in mockery of the human scientists playing god as a part of the story in new Doom.

I still like the idea of Phobos / Diemos / Mars being a toxic waste dump. You can't dump that stuff on Earth, why not dump it on the moon? Well how do you get it there? Space shuttles... until UAC is like we have a better idea. Teleporters. Brilliant. Let's do it! aaaaahhhh monsters!

Well, the enemies disintegrated just for performance issues. It was a design decision meant to improve performance just like not being able to hold the flashlight and a gun at the same time.

I honestly thought that Doom 3's story had some interesting elements to it, such as the ancient alien civilization. Would have been cool if they had some more levels where you explored more of the ancient ruins.

Doom 3 could have been an awesome game if they had just made the combat better, the levels not so linear, allowed you to hold a flashlight and a gun at the same time, etc. Not everything from Doom 3 was crap.

My explanation tends to be that some greater force (a devil allegory) crafts the environments of Hell, as well as the demons, and places them there to do his bidding, which I suppose is kill humans.
