Krispy Posted June 23, 2015 x^2 = x*x, not x+x. Also, If 2x = x 2x-x = 0 x(2-1) = 0 x(1) = 0 x = 0 0 Share this post Link to post
40oz Posted June 23, 2015 Krispy said:x^2 = x*x, not x+x. I was confused about this at first, but i think the message is stating x^2 = x+x ... +x you add x as many times as the value of x is so for example if x=4 4^2 = 4+4+4+4 if x=8 8^2 = 8+8+8+8+8+8+8+8 the rest of it I'm having trouble following. What kind of proof is that? I study accounting, I only do basic math. 0 Share this post Link to post
Memfis Posted June 23, 2015 Yeah 40oz, that's what I meant, common sign in Russia at least. 0 Share this post Link to post
Cacatou Posted June 23, 2015 It assumes x is an integer. Integers are not continuous. Differentiation works on continuous domains. For instance if x were 1.5 we can't write 1.5^2 as 1.5 + 1.5 + ... + 1.5 being done 1.5 times. 0 Share this post Link to post
Doominator2 Posted June 23, 2015 uhhh... 9+10=22 Proof Spoiler 9+10=19 add 3=22 uhhh... halflife 3 confirmed???... I think? uhhh... right? 0 Share this post Link to post

You can represent the problem like this as well: http://imgur.com/yDWyH2S If x is an integer, I'm assuming the issue must lie in differentiating the summation. 0 Share this post Link to post

General Rainbow Bacon Posted June 24, 2015 Mathematic proof that Women are evil: first, we state that women require time and money: Women = time * money ...and as we all know, "time is money": Time = Money ...and therefore: Women = Money * Money = (Money)^2 ...and because "Money is the root of all evil": Money = sqrt(evil) ...therefore: Women = (sqrt[evil])^2 ...and we are forced to conclude that: Women = Evil 0 Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted June 24, 2015 Memfis said:What's going on here? -> http://i.imgur.com/KUke18v.png x² = x*x -- okay so far (we'll assume x is an integer, so the "x+x+x" thing works) derivative: 2x = 1*x -- nope, the mistake is here; it should be 2*x. It should be adding 2s here, not 1s. General Rainbow Bacon said:...and because "Money is the root of all evil": It's "the love of money" that is the root of all evil. 0 Share this post Link to post
Cacatou Posted June 24, 2015 The way I was mentioning it fails basically relies on the fact that differentiation is the limiting value as the value of x converges to a fixed point. If we rely on an integer domain we cannot come infinitely closer to this fixed point as integer domains are discrete and not continuous unlike real numbers. Therefore you cannot apply the derivative on integers only. 0 Share this post Link to post

The weird thing is I was quite good at this stuff in school, but that was 20 years ago. 0 Share this post Link to post
geo Posted June 24, 2015 I have to do a lot of math every day including find the diagonal of a rectangle. Then this weekend I botched simple math in a high pressure environment when dealing with a scumbag trying to not pay at a charity event. It will haunt me for a while. For the past two months I've had to do a lot of trigonometry and geometry rather than the usual algebra and calculus. 0 Share this post Link to post

FireFish Posted June 24, 2015 Memfis said:What's going on here? -> http://i.imgur.com/KUke18v.png ---- x ^ 2 = {x + x + x ... + x} for an x number of times. as an example ; if x would have been 4 then X ^ 2 = 16 = 4 + 4 + 4 + 4. ---- 2 * x = {1 + 1 + 1 ... + 1} for an x number of times. 2 * x would mean 1 + 1 for an x amount of times. ---- 2 * x = x X + X = 2 ---- 2 = 1 So they conclude 2 to be 1 because 1 * x = 1 I am so ashamed of trying to make sense out of it (not). 2 * x = x + x = 2 = 1 because 1 * 1 = 1 and not 1 + 1 edit ; this crap was causing some brain damage, This joke equation... argh. 0 Share this post Link to post
Maes Posted June 24, 2015 Heh. A cousin of mine once argued that all mathematical proofs could be enormously simplified, if one noted that: x^0 = y ^0, therefore x=y for any number. So, all numbers are the same. No need for solving and stuff ;-) 0 Share this post Link to post
