Any Free PC games you can recommend?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for some free PC games I can download. It's best for me if the games meet the following criteria:

-The file size can be anything as long as it's lower of equal to 300MB

-I'll play any type of game as long as it's not an RTS

-I don't really care about the graphics to much. As long as It's quality is like the NES or better, I'll play it.

-Although this isn't a necessity, I'll give it bonus points for having multiple playable characters

-If it's a fighting game (not a side scrolling beat'em up) It has to be violent (like Mortal Kombat or Killer Instinct)

-The length doesn't matter. But bonus points if it's more than 2 hours long.

-It's best if the game doesn't contain any viruses.

Can you recommend any for me?

GoG has a bunch of free games that are pretty small in file size. The ones I can think of that are really good are Tyrian 2000(vertical scrolling shooter) Stargunner(Horizontal scrolling shooter) Ultima IV(RPG although very dated graphics) and Beneath a Steel Sky(very good cyberpunk point and click adventure game)

Most Apogee Software and Epic Megagames freeware re-releases are worth looking into, except maybe the really old ASCII-based stuff.
http://www.remaininplay.com is a useful resource for other stuff that's been re-released.

http://www.locomalito.com might be worth looking at for stuff that was designed as freeware from the start, though they have that purposely old style that might or might not appeal to you.

Nethack.

Try the vulture's eye mod if you are struggling. Nethack is honestly what replaced Doom in my top one list.

Dead cyborg episode 1 - 3D adventure - around 60mb for 1.

Epic inventor - 2D adventure with crafting - around 120mb
http://www.epicinventor.com/

Street fighter x megaman - Official free 2D megaman game.

Noxious - 3D dead space inspired game - 200+ mb.

Haunt - creepy game - 3D but bigger than 300mb.

Stealth bastard - 2D side scrolling action / stealth.
This used to be a free HIGH quality completed game for more than 3 years now, but they went commercial with newer versions so they 'fake' and 'act' as if the previous game was a prototype.

well i know a lot of free games... i just dont want to type them all out.
And if you are feeling adventurous and anti graphical ; brogue.

I think we've had a similar thread recently.

Spelunky Classic (2D platformer/rogue-lite)
Battle for Wesnoth (turn-based strategy)
GunGodz (Wolf-3dish FPS)
I Wanna Be The Boshy (masochistic 2D platformer)
Perspective (3D/2D puzzler)

There's this little chestnut that you can grab off Steam: it's a fairly decent horror game, although it has the odd dickish jumpscare. If you were willing to shell out $5 I'd try to convince you to buy The Binding of Isaac as well, but I can understand if you don't want to.

Cyberdogs, C-Dogs and Abuse are great DOS games. You can download them for free since Cyber/C-Dogs is freeware and Abuse is public domain. You need DOSbox to run them though(Just drag their .exe to Dosbox and you should be good to go)
Also, Cube and Cube 2 like Voltcom9 said. I highly recommend these, they're kind of a favorite of mine when it comes to free games.

They're offering Gun Godz (90mb) for free on here. It's a fantastic Wolf 3D style shooter based on Venus where you shoot bear looking aliens.

I'm also obliged to plug Spelunky to every single person I know, regardless of which version it is.

3D Realms also offers various games as freeware from their website

Not exactly sure ont he legality of it... BUT, removed seems to have a lot of old shareware/abandonware DOS games. Lots of fun to be had.

EDIT BY MOD: abandonware is not legal, do not link to these sites

I'd say try out my Cybernoid clone, but it's not finished yet :( Unless you enjoy black screens with a movable spaceship on it!

Armagetron Advanced is sorta cool. It's free and open source. There's also these:

  • T2002 - Remake/successor of Turrican 2. Like Hurrican, which Jaxxoon R mentioned, but it's closer to the original.
  • Gods Deluxe Remake - A remake of another Amiga/Atari ST game called Gods. It was also on the Genesis. This one is in Java.
  • Space Hulk - Not the original FPS, the "Vengeance of The Blood Angels" FPS, or the newer ones... Somebody once did a free video game version of the board game. No link since it was taken down, but with a bit of searching, you can find it.
  • Alien Assault - When the above mentioned Space Hulk game was threatened with a DMCA, the authors then made their own game that is almost like Space Hulk, but not quite. This is it. Too many RPG elements for my tastes, but still not bad.
  • Stepmania - DDR clone. Some searching will even turn up the original music tracks. Otherwise, DDR Encore is a good series of music tracks.

Thanks for all the suggestions. However because I was in a hurry when I typed this thread, I forgot some vital details.

-My PC is Windows 7 (Service Pack 1)
-RAM is 2GB
-I have a 32 bit Operating System
-Processor: Intel Pentium CPU. 2.13 Ghz

Will all the above games work on this computer?

Another Metroid 2 Remake and Sonic After the Sequel might have performance issues at certain points due to being built off of extremely unoptimized engines, but everything else should run fine.

everything 2D i mentioned should work with your ammount of RAM and CPU power.

But Dead cyborg needs at least a system able to run half life 2 and so does Haunt to put it a simple way without numbers.

If you like those old point and click adventure games with pixelart I would recommend the few remakes of older games by AGD Interactive such as King's Quest 1, 2 & 3 and Quest for Glory 2 here: http://www.agdinteractive.com/games/games.html

There's also two free remakes by Infamous Adventures of Space Quest 2 and King's Quest 3 here: http://www.infamous-adventures.com/home/

Both of them have their own different remakes of King's Quest 3 but you are better off trying AGD's remake out of the two of them.

As long as you can run DOSBox with decent performance, the Apogee/Epic stuff should emulate fine. Specs sound fairly comparable to what I've used except I have 8 gigs of RAM. CPU speed probably matters more.

The Locomalito stuff should be pretty lightweight too.
