Share Your Sprites!

I thought that instead of a very pixelated photo-based bong that many can't tell what's it supposed to be I decided to maybe go for the cliché cannabis leaf sprite after seeing such a simple a nice pixel art one in Southpark: Joining The Panderverse so I recreated it. But as a really bad pixel artist, especially creating from scratch, I was wondering how to insert some features like depth, colors etc to the leaf so it wouldn't be just one color? Any good _simple_ guides or tips anyone? (compatible with Paint Shop Pro 7)

 

Or maybe someone wants to take a crack at this if they're bored? Anyway this one color example is free to use as I copied design from SP which probably copied it from somewhere (only so many ways to draw the leaf using so few pixels).

I don't use paint shop pro 7 but if it's a good image manipulator you can try recoloring it with gradients in order to get a more natural look. Or you could switch to GIMP... And use color gradients to give it a more natural look.

I messed up the original post so it didn't show the already failed gradient attempt. Any tips on improving this? What about animating? I don't want it to be one frame sprite as it'll replace some minor power up or sumtin and every else has 2-4 frames of animation.

 

BTW. I'd welcome all alcohol, drugs, tobacco and ordinary house/office/urban etc stuff (not desolated wastelands etc but regular stuff) sprites and textures. I know the most common ones (Duke3D rips and R667 props), was hoping for something more less-used as I've gotten tired of seeing many of the same textures since the 90's. You can DM me if you know good resources etc or reply to this.

I couldn't give productive input without seeing what you did and knowing what you're trying to do.

I can say that color gradients are not an alternative to animation. They can be used separately or together.

You can add images to the game via a pwad without removing or altering any of the Iwad components (which you don't want to do). Even constrained by adding assets that only replace existing actors you can add as many images for those replacement actors as you want, and if you replace actors with random spawners you can add as many actors as you want.

For those not in the know, PUSS XXII: The Chilling Winds of Dis features and entirely redecorated bestiary that features a brand new biome of monsters similar but yet distinct from those we all know and love very well created by myself along with a team of very talented artists. Essentially, monsters from the very bottom of hell where it's cold as nuts and dark as... hell, but darker. Listed above is a sheet of all of our sprite replacements! The  recolored snake-man is from a Heretic(by Raven Software) prop.

Free to use if appropriate credit is given.

Don't go charging money for that game, given that you'd be looking at using (edited) copyrighted assets or not have explicit permissions to do so from the artist(s) you borrow from.

It will be totally free, non profit and done just for fun, which will show off the animations, I'm only using all of the sprite sheets consensually shared here and obviously give credit where it's due, I just love the assets here and it's perfect for what I'm making, thank you so much, hope you enjoy it when I'm done!

A (somewhat) quick concept using the sprite sheet; proper Jumpsuit (aka Maintenance, Engineer, etc) Worker zombies, to theoretically replace osj's attempt using the lower quality Wolfenstein ones.

General art design ideas:
- Replacement of the olive military belt with a more standard normal brown belt
- removal of knee pads
- boots are recoloured black
- player coloured jumpsuit for ez translation
- shrinking + blending of former armour pauldrons, extension of sleeves, replacement of breastplate with zipper (basically make it look less like marine armor and LOOK like jumpsuits)
- a "weapon template" variant so artists can edit their own weapons over the sprites easily (hammers, wrenches, etc) rather than just one or two static sprite sets

 

probably won't finish it (too much work for my ADHD, and bigger, better fish to fry) [yes that means I am aware of the funny lighting on the left arm] so do with this concept what you will (will YOU be the one to add actually fitting doom civilian zombies?)

Better late than never! Here are some non-fatality sprites that lead to the bisected CyberDemon legs using sprites from 'Cyberdemon fatality & alternative deaths' by 00_Zombie_00.

I got bored with the base rocket launcher sprites, so I slapped together this shielded one semi-based on the Panzerschreck. I used shield sprites created by mryayayify found in the PBShields wad and the base rocket launcher sprites, and created a modified pickup sprite as well.

EDIT: I attached a wad that adds the new rocket launcher sprites (and some reticle sprites and various beeps I created. Not sure of the origin of the reloading audio.) along with some decorate coding to add a secondary homing function that fires 4 smaller homing rockets in succession.

The rocket launcher is auto-reloaded after each fire to simulate how one would manually load each rocket. Non-homing rockets have also been modified to have a slight delay after being fired before zipping off. Homing functionality isn't perfect, but gets the job done. To use it, you must hold alt-fire while aiming at an enemy and once it's locked you can release the key to fire.
