IE issue: homepage gaity

Recommended Posts

Help.

Some heinous porn site has inserted it's Satan-breath into my IE6.

Each time I open IE following shutdown it has once again made its specific cgi-bin address the homepage. Because I have PUK set to destroy anything with such an address it means everytime I open IE from scratch the window is closed. The humour wore off very quickly.

I've tried all the usual homepage resets, it's fine for the duration of that uptime period, but it comes back after restart.

I tried clearing history, deleting all cookies, all temp IE files, the lot. It still comes back.

Where is the little basrad hiding? Anyone know? Cheers.

You can probably find something to do what you want on downloads.com, I remember seeing something like it but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called.

Does that include resetting via control panel without IE even running?

Also check your startup folder for anything that shouldn't be there and win.ini to see if any unknown progs have been added to the run or load lines in there.

Grab a program that allows you to check any programs that are set to run at start up via the registry (eg X-setup, Opti startup, (maybe) system mechanic, plus many, many others).

And yeah, all the usual virus sweeps and so on.

And stop surfing for porn - you'll go blind! ;-)

Check yer IE plugins folder. I got one once that kept on resetting my home page, cleared out all registry entries for it, still did it, so I checked my plugins folder and there was a DLL. Deleted it, no problems since then, all good.

EDIT: Plugin folders
Win9X: \program files\internet explorer\plugins
2K/XP: \documents and settings\somewhere in there (can't remember off the top of my head and couldn't be fucked rebooting in to win2k)

It's a prog called "openme.exe"

Huh? The guy's sending you porn because he hates you?

Whoa. At least he doesn't give you money or something.

Uh, problem found. It had basically destroyed my user.dat, once I deleted that, problem solved.

Of course, I have to do all my individual settings again, but I needed a clean up anyhow.

Thanks for your help.
