opengl is much slower than software. !#$@#¨%*(&!@$!!!!!!

If anything it would be OpenGL or Vulkan. Vulkan is heavily Mantle inspired. However Microsoft is stuck in their own box, so only Direct3D for them.

However, consoles still have rather proprietary graphical interfaces.

i see. well thats cool to know. its surprising since amd/ati has never had great opengl support. it seems counter intuitive.

That's more because OpenGL is a mess. The API has had some really cancerous growth over the years and is overly complicated and hard to implement.

My hope is that Vulkan will prompt a platform independent GL implementation on top of the newer, much closer to the hardware API. That could solve a lot of problems because there's far less variation in driver support.
