Spirit Posted July 16, 2015 You can list TAR contents on archive.org by adding a trailing slash: https://archive.org/download/doomworld/doomworld.tar/ Thanks to their great support, I will be get *all* the files from Atomicgamer archived. I will try to do that as soon as possible. I might need to rent a beefy server for a month but I would just take those ~50€ (if lucky) from the Quaddicted hosting fund, I am sure the donators would support that. :) 0 Share this post Link to post
geo Posted July 16, 2015 Did they ever host a Majora's Mask website? They won't migrate, they'll just rewind time by 3 days. 0 Share this post Link to post

Phendrena Posted July 17, 2015 It is good to hear from the guys at AG and to why they are shutting down. Valid reasons of course and I appreciate that as I'm sure we all do! Anyone contacted Bethesda/ID to see if they can help us out?? :) Dave Seriously though, if we need to start getting some cash together for stuff then setup a PayPal. 0 Share this post Link to post

Hosted virtual machines are dirt cheap nowadays. None of the stuff you describe is even necessary. It's just a website. This really isn't hard. 0 Share this post Link to post

Well, never hosted a website before, wasn't sure what all was required. Router's, firewalls, switches, servers and circuits are my thing. Which get expensive, fast. 0 Share this post Link to post

I've seen lots of people do it so don't feel bad :) It's probably rare that you'd have to worry about networking too much when just setting up a small website like Doomworld. Traditionally it's been a case of: buy a server, put it into a colo facility / data center. The DC should usually provide the networking for you. Recent years (~10 years) have seen this move towards virtual hosting instead. Nowadays you pay a company like Linode (which is what hosts chocolate-doom.org for example) to run the physical servers, each of which is then divided up into multiple virtual machines that get sold to customers. End result: pricing is cheap, it's all software (making it easy to increase RAM/disk/CPU or turn up more servers), and you don't need to worry about managing physical servers because that's someone else's problem. Medium to large sized companies might want to run their own servers instead and host them in their offices rather than in a shared DC facility. That's the point where you need to worry about running your own networking, dedicated lines, etc. 0 Share this post Link to post

I was thinking an entirely different ballpark; corporate servers/infrastructure/datacenters... at least the equipment we use to maintain our internal and external stuff. Guess personal hosting is nowhere near as complex as I thought :) 0 Share this post Link to post
SYS Posted July 18, 2015 Virtualization is great. I keep a Win XP vm for certain legacy applications. I still like Win 7, but virtual installs of Win 8 & Win 10 let me noodle around with them without the commitment. Got Redhat and Ubuntu VMs, for when I want to screw around with Linux. Windows Server 2008 R2 vms for screwing around with Active directory and Domain controllers. The Icing on the cake is GNS3. You can map and run virtual Cisco Routers from their ios images and even attach virtual OS's to any given interface. You can practically do an entire virtualized topology. There is some strange patent on Cisco's switching technology so the switches can't be properly virtualized, or it would be very illegal to do so. Again I've sucessfully offtopic tangent-ed. 0 Share this post Link to post

Annunakitty Posted July 18, 2015 Just now seeing this announcement. I'm sure I'm completely and totally crazy, but I thought Doomworld was part of UGO Networks? I swear I remember seeing their logo in the upper right corner before. Am I thinking of some other Doom website? Or is AtomicGamer ultimately part of UGO? I am legitimately kind of confused right now, I think I need a nap. 0 Share this post Link to post
SYS Posted July 18, 2015 It used to be a part of UGO. UGO got bought by IGN in 2011 and eventually went belly up in 2013. Atomic Gamer at some point became it's own thing. I think that's how it went anyway. More importantly, DW is here to stay and on it's way to a new server. 0 Share this post Link to post

Annunakitty Posted July 18, 2015 Ok, so I'm not crazy. Or at least, not because of that. Did Telefragged become AtomicGamer because of UGO shutting down, or did it happen before that? I guess it doesn't really matter at this point, just curiosity. 0 Share this post Link to post

Astral-Doomer Posted July 18, 2015 I'd say, set-up a donation event(Short & long term), where the site has to met a certain goal every month & year, or something along those lines. Probably something much simpler(Donations), that others suggested. ;-) 0 Share this post Link to post
Spirit Posted July 18, 2015 Btw, this forum uses "Nobody <nobody@metroplex.tel<nospam>gged.com>" for outgoing mail (reply notifications), don't forget about that. You should easily be able to run Doomworld and all associated sites from donations, I have been doing focused yearly hosting fund donation runs for Quaddicted the past 2 or 3 years and always got much more than needed. Doomworld has a much bigger community, so you gonna swim in money. ;) Mirroring the files is in progress, sadly very slowly. 0 Share this post Link to post

Spirit Posted July 18, 2015 Yeah in a way D: Reboot for restoring gbit connection turned into total disaster and now I am stuck with trying to configure grub and mdadm with only "server is not responsing to ping" and "rescue image booted" as diagnosis... :( I do have backups but now I need a new server unless I can figure this poop out. 0 Share this post Link to post

Fonze Posted July 19, 2015 Lol! This thread is taking a funny turn. DooM_RO said:Doomworld is love, Doomworld is life :( So we should start a Doom/Flying Spaghetti Monster religion? We could say that we worship the pixelated, impaled head of John Romero as it spits out gifts to us in the form of monster spawners. On our yearly holiday we could make pinatas of Doom monsters, filled with rockets and bullets, and punch them til the stuff falls out. Or we get blown up and turned into hamburger. Either way, it's Doom's Day! Ah, bad pun on that name... *Edit* I just remembered that this thread was titled "SERIOUS TIME" ... Uh, my bad, I'm bad at serious time. Thanks again to TF/AG for hosting this great site all this time and thanks to those ensuring it will continue! 0 Share this post Link to post
