Maps that use lighting very well.

Would appreciate some recommendations -- I'm looking for some study material.

dbimpact by Rottking & Ralphis. It's an E1 replacement, large maps. Not a bunch of sidedefs and vertices barfed everywhere. The light changes are sometimes dramatic, it reminds you that not everything has to look realistic to be visually appealing.

I'd say that most of modern polished quality wads use lighting pretty well. Jenesis, Vanguard, Lunatic, BTSX, Valiant, Sunlust, Vela Pax, etc.

Sunlust has so many might gradients, the blockmap bug keeps you from shooting the monsters half the time

I might have completely misunderstood how the blockmap works, but I don't think the blockmap bug is related to number of lines of sectors, just the alignment of the 128x128(?) blocks in relation to the map structures.
